Freaking out

So just around 9:30 pm our doorbell rang. I go to answer it, and it's two police officers.  They were looking for a guy named Ricky who supposedly lives at my address.  My H and I know no one by that name. Then I'm asked if we have an escalade or if we know anyone who does. Finally they ask if I just moved in (we closed last June, I officially moved in after the wedding).  Then the abruptly turned and left.

So the reason for me starting to freak out is because when we moved in, we called a locksmith to rekey the locks since the owner locked the keys in the house including the one that was supposed to be in the realtor's lock box.  The locksmith couldn't break in through the deadbolt, and had to go climb on the rocky slope that's behind our TH, climb over the fence and break in through the patio in order to let us in the front door. Since the lock was deemed "unbreakable" he rekeyed the interior garage door to match the front door. There is also a regular lock on the front door, but he couldn't rekey it to match the deadbolt but he did rekey it to a new key.

Problem lies in the fact that when I tried to double lock the front door tonight (usually only do the dead bolt), I realize that it's broken and the twist lock just turns and turns but doesn't lock.  So now I'm worried that this dude has a copy of the key.  The previous owner only bought this house about 3 or 4 years ago and he had renters living in the house when we purchased it. Husband had been here with the locksmith- if I had been there at the time I would have insisted on automatically rekeying all the locks regardless just for piece of mine.I was worried the first few nights in the house, but it hasn't bothered me now until tonight. I plan on going to the hardware store in the morning to get a new springlatch door knob so that I can have a bottom lock that actually locks in addition to the "unbreakable" deadbolt.

Re: Freaking out

  • If you're feeling unsafe, call a 24 hour locksmith and have them change the locks tonight. They'll charge a bit more, but I wouldn't risk it if you're super uncomfortable! Otherwise I'd definitely call a locksmith tomorrow and have it taken care of...I wouldn't keep the locks the same, especially since you've discovered a broken one and are suspicious of a previous renter still having a key.

I'd also consider calling the police if you think the broken lock has been tampered with. They'll come out, sweep your house and perimeter and take down your information. It's good to get it on record if you think someone potentially tried to get in. In these instances, its way better to be safe than sorry!

Please be safe and let us know how everything is tomorrow! Try to stay as calm as you can, even though I'd be freaking out too! Sending safe, positive vibes your way

I second all of this.  Do what you need to do so you feel safe in your home.  Sending hugs and positive vibes your way!  Stay safe!

  • I agree with PP...any update!?!?!?
  • Get those things rekeyed!  And while you're at it check the latches and seals of windows and any other entrance points!  It's probably nothing, but there's no sense i worrying about it when it's an easy thing to check/repair/change for piece of mind.
  • All the windows are sealed and fine.  The broken lock actually locks from the outside, its just the twist knob on the inside that's broken. So the lock broke randomly not because someone broke it trying to get in, which is reassuring. We bought a new knob/lock for that one, and if B can figure out how to install it tonight then it'll be fixed tonight.  If not, my dad is coming over tomorrow and will install it then.  I also discovered that our local ace will rekey doors, so that will happen tomorrow too.   Last night I completely forgot that the aluminum screen door (It's not a full screen door- only a small portion is actually a screen and it has a sliding metal piece that locks into place behind the screen) also locks so that reassured me last night when I went to double check all the doors before bed.  But yes, as of tomorrow we will have everything rekeyed at a price that fits our budget. (If we had extra money I probably would have called for a 24 hour locksmith, especially if B hadn't been home).  But he was actually calm, and I'm not working but can't collect unemployment, so I'm glad that we figured out that we could actually lock the lower lock (by going outside) and the screen door and that new locks will be in place tomorrow!
