Where would you live if you were a single girl?

I was offered a new job in the Suffern area that I start in mid August.  I'm meeting with a realtor in a couple of weeks to look at rentals and I have no idea where I want to live.  I know the realtor will help, but if you were me, where would you want to live knowing you would have to be in Suffern for work.  Closer to NYC?  Closer to Suffern? I'm single (divorced) and 31.  This is my first post graduate school job and I would be living alone.  I could probably afford ~1500 per month.  Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Personally, I love Nyack.  Lots of shops and restaurants, and a great town to walk around.  Make sure you look carefully at the area around any apts, since there is a sketchy part of town just south of Main St.  You can get a one bed for $1500 or less, but parking can be an issue, so if you can find a place with parking, you'll be much happier than if you have to do street parking.

I agree Nyack would be good.  I would also check out Ramsey and Ridgewood NJ.  Ridgewood is a few minutes further but has a great town with lots of restaurants and shops.  The train stops there for Hoboken/NY if you go to the city a lot too and it's a shorter trip than from Ramsey or Suffern.
  • i'd get 2 realtors - one in ny and one in nj.

in nj - check out ramsey, mahwah, allendale.

in ny, i'd look in suffern first. i know lots of people who have lived or currently still live in bon aire. lots of different sized units.  i'd also check out nanuet in the hamlets.

my friend lives in suffern and teaches in sloatsburg. while i am not familiar with the town, i do know she has a very short commute.

  • I'd live in Suffern.  I did for a while. I liked it a lot.  Pearl River and/or Nanuet would be my other choices as well.

I bet Rachel H could be of help.  :)
