Birth Control recommendations please!

Hello!  I'm sure this has been posted before but I need something current.  I meet with a new doctor next week and have to pick what birth control to take.  (I had been on depo for over 7 years and decided it was time to go off of it-too many osteoporosis risks).  Now I am at a loss of what to do for pill selection.  My main things:

I DO NOT want to gain any weight.

No depression or decreased sex drive side effects.

And of course I dont want to get pregnant (duh!)

On the depo I never got my period either which was a bonus so I am planning on taking the pills so I am able to only have 4 periods a year.  (This irregular stuff I am having now is NOT working.)  Thanks for the help-I feel like I'm in my early 20s again.  Geez.  :)

Re: Birth Control recommendations please!

  • Seasonale or Seasonique would be good options for fewer periods.  They allow 4 periods a year, every 3 months.  Depression, loss of sex drive, and weight gain are most common on progesterone only BC...like Depo-Provera...so if you survived Depo, you will likely do fine with a progesterone/estrogen combo pill also.

Keep in mind every woman responds differently to different BC so what works for one might not work for another.

  • I did well on Yasmin before having DS.  It's a monophasic pill unlike the Ortho-tri-cyclen I was on before. I found that triphasic pills made me nutso and I had a lot of breakthrough bleeding.

After he was born I got an IUD...Mirena.  It was heaven.

  • I'm going to second the Mirena....have had no side effects other than some cramping the first week or so after getting it put in.  No periods, no weight gain, it is awesome.  Can be pricey though, so check to see how much your insurance covers, but I feel like it's worth it.
  • I take Seasonique, which I really like.  The key is that you have to take it very close to the same time everyday, otherwise spotting may occur.
  • I am on Loestrin 24fe. I've been on it for a year and like it. I haven't gained any weight on it and barely have a period. I will go a few months without having it and then will spot for a few days and that is it. I am debating on geting Mirena though but just because I hate having to remember to take a pill everyday.

  • I'm on the generic of Yaz and love it.  It's 24 days of the same pill and then 4 sugar pills at the end of the pack.  My period is much lighter and shorter!!

I have the Mirena IUD. Some doctors won't do it for people who have not had children yet but it has been approved. Depends on your doctor. Many women have no period on it. I have very light spotting and that's all. I love it. Low hormone so the threat of side effects is a bit lower. It's more effective than tubal ligation!

Do you understand that you may have side effects with any drug you take? You can't just say, "I don't want to gain weight, have decreased sex drive, etc." You won't know until you try it. Annoying, but that's that way it is.
