How much would you pay for a dogsitter?

So, a girl that used to work at the gym DH worked at is going to stay at our house and watch Shrek in December while we are gone to Disney.  Normally he stays with my parents but my parents are going with us, yay!

He's never been boarded but has been to doggie day out.  With that being said, I can't board him for 10 days.  It would break his heart not to be with someone.  So, this girl is going to come stay at our house with him.

Shrek's an easy dog.  Eat, sleep and repeat with the occasional bathroom break outside.   I told her I would stock the house with whatever food she wants.  How much should I pay her?

I do plan to get her a Disney souvenier but that's in no way a substitute for paying her - just something fun.  Also, I think she's around 21.

Re: How much would you pay for a dogsitter?

  • I would check out petsitter.com and see how much the going rate is. I think $15-20 a day was average for dogs when I was looking at sitters for our cats. We ended up going with someone who just came by to visit once a day for the cats at $5 a pop, which obviously you can do with cats but not with dogs.
  • Awesome, thank you!

Looks like 10-20 is the going rate around here.  So, I'm thinking 150-200 should be appropriate which is what I was thinking anyway.  We're gone 10 days but the first day we don't even leave until noon and she won't get her until evening.

I did a dogsitting thing once and I think I got paid about 150 too but it's been awhile.  I feel old now, lol!

  • Wow!  You guys live in good areas.  For our dog walker, we pay $15 per walk/$45 per day for 5 visits while we are away.

If we boarded, I know it is $35 per dog per day.  I much prefer our doggies staying in our home.

  • I'm guessing a lot of that has to do with cost of living too.  Ours is really low compared to NY/NJ area.

Me too! I think I got $50/week to live with 3 cats, which was only a few blocks from my apartment and $75/week to pet-sit for some people who lived way out in the country. Of course, that's when I was in college. Lots of inflation since then.
