Who has taken the GRE?

I'm a fairly strong test taker in general, I think I could theoretically do well enough on a September test, but how long did everyone else prepare?
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

Re: Who has taken the GRE?

  • I prepped for 6 months, but most of that was getting the cash together to take it.  I really liked the Kaplan's test prep book and the vocab cards.  My book is probably outdated, but they're not all that expensive on Amazon.

  • I just bought one, and the test has apparently been completely redone!

  • I took it about 18 months ago.  It was HARD but I am a shitastic test taker (yet I'm a teacher..go figure.)

  • I took it about 8 years ago (wow, can't believe it's been that long) and took one of the Kaplan test-prep classes.  I found the class most helpful on the vocab/language section because my college classes were more science/math based so it was a great refresher.

  • Ditto Two*True, except I found the math to be more helpful since my college classes were language-based. I would never have wanted to spend the money, but I was talking to H on the phone one night about how I couldn't remember any of the math stuff. (I hadn't taken math since my sophomore year of HS) and he signed me up without telling me the next day.

  • i took it five years ago.  i printed the free study materials from the GRE site and studied twice for an hour or two.  i got good scores, but i am a very strong test taker.
  • You will be fine if you start studying now.

  • I just took it a few months ago. I've been out of college for 11 years (the last time) and haven't done much math since high school, over 20 years ago. I had six weeks to study. The verbal part was easy for me. All I did was vocabulary flashcards and I flipped through them whenever I thought of it. I spent the majority of my study time on math. I probably studied 3-4 days a week for 2-3 hours at a time. Overall, I did fine. I aimed for the score required by my school and ended up doing much better. I know it's hard to really tell from a message board, but you seem quite intelligent and I don't think you'll have any problems at all.
  • Yeah - the test is being completely revamped in August. I'll have to start re-studying for the new test and will probably prep 3-4 months. I'm pretty sure the math will be what I focus on most.

  • I took it in May, studied for about a month.  I did well on the math and the verbal, not as well as I expected on the writing portion.  I don't know what the new test is like.

I took it 18 months ago and didn't study at all. I was applying to an MA program in Literature, so my math score didn't really matter, and as an English teacher I pretty much live the verbal and writing sections 40+ hours every week. I did extremely well, and had no trouble getting into my program.

  • My sister just took and studied hard core for it. She got a book but idk what one and got a 1210 on it and her essays still being scored
  • I am a crappy test taker.  Well, wait - I should rephrase... I am a good non-standardized test taker and a crappy standardized test taker.  I took the test once without studying, did awful, then took it again after completing a Kaplan course.  The course really helped my score a ton, but, my problem is math and my math didn't improve much at all. Anyway, I think if you are traditionally good on standardized tests, you shouldn't have a problem at all! Good luck!
  • I checked out the CD that came with registration the night before the test. That was it. I got the same score as my FI, who is smarter and studied beforehand.

If you did well at the SAT, this'll be similar and you can expect the same kind of stuff. It's a lot about how you think, not what you already know.

oh, this is a really good point, especially for the math section. There will be some complicated problems, but you're rarely expected to actually solve them. You simply need to know how to arrive at the correct solution. That was the hardest part for me to learn. When I first started studying, I had pages and pages of paper filled with complicated equations, and I was multiplying and dividing 5 and 6 digit numbers. The study guide will show you that you don't have to solve anything. There are very easy ways of determining the correct answer, doing very little math.

  • Thanks guys! I've decided to take it in the winter, so I have something to look forward to/focus on while FI is gone.

I did well on the SATs, and I got my test prep book in the mail yesterday. My dad is a math and physics professor, so he's going to go over stuff with me on Sundays before football.

I'm psyched! I love standardized tests!
