And any other teachers, or parents who know the answer to this question...

Whats the best site, or way, to look up ranking of school systems in counties? And individual schools?

Re: Kate

  • I would love to know this too. We're definitely not switching counties but I'd like to know which schools are the best. The house we're looking for I want to be our "forever" home or "until Campbell goes to college" home so I've let us drag our feet on our house hunt b/c I'm not sure how to pick a neighborhood based on the school zones.

  • Other boards have talked about www.greatschools.org before.

  • Ergh, according to that site the schools around the house were looking at suck. But the reviews from parents are all fantastic.

I used that site as well. Also this one for a visual:

I assume you can search your area, a map of NH probably doesn't help you much :)

You should also be able to look on your state department of edu. website to see test scores, etc. You won't see any reviews per say.

  • NY has report cards for all the districts on the state education website. I'm not sure if VA has something like that or how they would rank them since it's by county right?

  • Around here, the realtors know all of that. You should also be able to visit or call some of the boards of educations about which of their schools have the highest scores, etc...

  • I'm just not sure how much I want to bank on this school system. The county is building up because everyones moving there but still working here.

For example, the builder of the house we like is building 10 minutes away from us, but this community is 100k more than where we looked at. The change on COL is ridiculous.

  • Mar, aren't you out in/toward Leesburg?  I know years ago, the whole farm land vs. growth debate was a biggie, could that be what's driving up prices?

We are in leesburg, and looking to move toasted Winchester. The second you head west past leesburg its so much cheaper. Anything lovettsville is where the houses are 100k more then where were looking and it's not an extremely well developed area, it's just in loudoun county. We have two story condos selling in the mid 400s, there's just no way we can afford the house we want. I know Winchester is growing quickly, most of the pd is or has moved out that way already. There's really not a whole lot of true farm land in leesburg anymore, and honestly I have no idea if or has anything to do with prices or not. Winchester is still considered redneck, and is a poor county compared to here but with so many people moving there you would think that more money coming in will improve schools etc, right? My stepdad was going on about it last night after a few minutes I tuned him out, yay a.d.d!! D is all gung-ho about moving there, my only hesitation is the difference in the quality of the school systems. Right now, loudoun is one of the best, out there it's not the worst, about the middle.. Ugh buying a house with kids to consider is so much harder!
