product fail - lip color

I decided I needed some new lip color - I basically use the same ones over and over and I wanted to branch out. A little. Nothing too crazy.

First, I got the Cover Girl Lipslicks in "princess" - a little pinky and I like the lipslicks concept. But when I put it on? It is somehow barely visible but also frosty (like old-lady lipstick).

Then, I got some of the Burt's Bees lip shimmer in "rhubarb." I've been having some issues with chapped lips lately (just the bottom lip and it's driving me nuts - any thoughts?) so I thought this would be good since it's moisturizing. It's also . . . orange. It made me look like I had been eating too much marinara and my lips were stained.

Ugh! $10 down the drain. I just want a cute, summery lip color.

Re: product fail - lip color

  • No idea about lip color but I have also had really bad chapped lips and I have been using petroleum jelly since Sunday and I have seen a huge difference.
  • not cheap but this is my new favorite lipgloss/color:

it basically gives your lips a berry tone and it's more like tinted gloss/balm

  • Are you drinking enough water?

In your case, I fully support a trip to Sephora or Ulta.  You really need to try on some colors, before you spend any more $$$!  There's a mini-Sephora in the Wheaton Mall JCP now.

  • If you're going drug store, I highly recommend Maybelline's Shinesational glosses.  They're sheer and come in a multitude of colors.  I particularly like the watermelon one- it is like a light reddish color.

If you're willing to go to Sephora, I highly recommend Dior's lipcolors.  They're phenomenal and last forever.  They are expensive though, but worth it.

I also love Clinique's glosses, specifically the Long Wear Glosswear ones, I have them in several shades.  I like Air Kiss (nude) and Kissyfit (hot pink) the best.

  • Clinique makes a great lip stain. Don't remember the name of it but they only make one color and it looks dark brown/almost blackish red. Don't freak. It goes on a subtle berry color and actually lasts like a stain is supposed to (well - not as long as promised but seriously, what lip product DOES last as long as comercials promise?) without drying out the lips something awful.
  • I'll preface this by saying that I'm not a lip person (eyes are usually the only thing I dress up daily) but I have used Stila's lip glaze since my wedding makeup lady used it on me. My favorite color is sadly discontinued (honeydew) but I like apricot for daily shimmer. It's a sticky lip gloss rather than a slippery one (I usually put a little lip balm under it). Not the cheapest at $22 but you can sample them at Ulta (and they sometimes have mini 3-packs for $12). Plus, they taste good!

Ulta, and I think Sephora too, let you return makeup that just doesn't work for you. I try not to abuse it, but sometimes things just turn out so bad they need to go back.

It's Black Honey.  I just got some myself and while it does look a little scary in the tube, it looks quite nice on (and I'm not generally a "pink" person).  I am sure you could give it a try at any Clinique counter.

Ha! Black Honey is the only one I have right now! I have the "Almost Lipstick" and the lip gloss. I was trying to break out of the rut.

  • I recently saw the ELF (Eye Lips Face) brand at Target.  It is extremely cheap (um, one dollar per product) but I don't wear makeup enough to justify spending a lot of money on it and when it comes to lips, I am definitely more of a chapstick person.  I gave their lipstick a try and I seriously think it's one of the best I've tried (for me).  They only have a few colors, I bought "Classy."  It's a very classic pink, yet neutral.  When I put it on, I feel like Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" when she puts her lipstick on in front of her mailbox.

If you prefer chapstick, I recommend Nivea's line.  I have every single color and product of the "Kiss of shine-color-shimmer-you name it."  Love.  The cherry does look very red when it goes on but it's cute.

  • Have you tried the Burt's Bees Pomegranate lip balm? I love that stuff. Very good for you lips, though not a lot of color. I use it by itself or under gloss (usually Clinique or Sephora brand, I'm not too picky about gloss).
