What do you think?

This has been going around my work

What are your thoughts?

I'm on the fence.  I totally agree there needs to be a limit, but am nervous that some families, that really need it, may be screwed as a result.  I am still all for the drug testing to receive benefits.  I had to piss in a cup to get my job to help pay for the bridge card program, so they can piss in the cup to get the benefits.

    Yup.

I am also on the fence post mainly because I was one of those needy families growing up when my mom was in school full time and had zero income except the money from the state to pay for college expences and child support from my dad.  this was probably a 2 year period.  My mom would get so angry at the people abusing it because she needed it.

I will say that I was irritated when a family in front of me in the grocery store bought food for what appeared to be a very large party (graduation or birthday) with a bridge card.  I was nosey and heard the total was over $250.

  • I think it's a good idea in general.  I think one of the big issues with welfare and other assistance is that it can make people complacent.  They get comfortable and lose motivation to get off of assistance (obviously not everyone is like this, but clearly some people are).  4 years seems like a reasonable amount of time to get your sh*t together.  However I also think it would be very reasonable to have some sort of system in place that would allow people/families to apply for an extension if they are still in dire circumstances.
  • Overall I think it's the only way to weed out those that abuse the system and shave the budget down to those that really need it. Some of the people that truly need it probably will likely experience difficulty, and that is sad. But there *might* be other agencies or local charities/food pantries from which they can receive assistance if their benefit is cut.

I am just really bitter about the whole system, because let's face it, for many this will always be their way of life. Some are perfectly okay with that- with no desire to be self sufficient or work their ass off to get an education, be an example and make a better life like Nephie's Mom. I loathe that sloth mentality and wish we could send all the scammers to an island far far away.

pretty much agree with this. I think its sad that some of the actual needy families will suffer. I think you need to prove that you NEED the assistance. It's sad that a few bad apples ruin it for everyone! And I am completely on board with the piss test.

I know H's aunt is like this. Both of her daughters dads aren't not around and she gets social security befefits for both of them (and herself for some reason). she refuses to work because if she does, then she loses part of her benefits Indifferent

  • I think that any social program will end up with people abusing it - there's never going to be a perfect system because there will always be scumbags looking for loopholes. It sucks because there are certainly families in need who get screwed over when other people abuse those support systems but I agree that there needs to be a limit.

And I 100% agree that there should be drug testing to get benefits. IMO it's ridiculous that the state doesn't drug test aide recipients.  If you've got money to spend on drugs then you shouldn't get aide from the state.

  • I like it.  However, I am not a fan of the socialistic way our country is headed anyway.

Lilnephie- you said it perfectly.  Your family really needed it at one point...for 2 years, not 5, 10, 20, etc.  My uncle works in a poverty stricken area as a teacher.  His project for the kids is to come up with a reasonable budget- he determines the low salary.  It's an attempt to show that they CAN do it without help if they graduate and get jobs.  Two girls completed the project with room for salon trips, vacations, etc. but did not allocate any food expenses.  When he asked them what they planned to eat, they responded with "Mr. P, that's what welfare is for."

And hell yes on the drug testing.  That is a no brainer to me and I don't get why it hasn't been a requirement all along.

I totally agree Mara.  In general, I think that four years should be a more than adequate amount of time for people to use the money given to improve their circumstances.  The idea of an extension system is great too, which would help families that truly need the assistance for longer get it.

  • I think it's a good idea.  I definitely support having it available to families who truly need it - I have relatives who have hit some major rough times because of job losses and are now using a bridge card - but so often it is abused.  Way back when I was in high school and working for my minimum wage at the local grocery store, I saw all the junk people bought with their bridge cards and it annoyed me to no end.
