UO Thursday

There's certainly plenty going on in the world that someone must disagree with something!

Mine: I'm finishing up my grad courses this month (9 hours in a month--whew!), and I had a disturbing conversation with some of the ladies from my classes. Well, it was more of me listening and chewing my food to keep my mouth busy while they discussed an issue. The issue? Homosexuality and students. How to accept them because it's "wrong" and still love them just like all the other students? Maybe it's easier for me as a HS teacher to deal with gay students, though I never really think about it. I wasn't raised to question others' sexuality or to think less of someone because of race/culture/orientation. Hell, my piano teacher ran off to Ohio to be with his gay lover when I was in the 8th grade. And that's pretty much how my mom told me.

"Fuzzy, Pianoman left to move to Ohio to be with his gay lover. We need to find you a new piano teacher."

"Huh, that was fast. Where are his kids going?" (they were teenagers)

"They're moving with him."

"Oh, that's good. I hope they are all happy there."

End of conversation. Nothing derogatory was ever said, because we loved my piano teacher. His orientation had no effect on our lives. It makes me sad that there are still people that can't "deal" with homosexuality.

I then called my mother and thanked her for raising me to be tolerant and accepting of people. She said, "Did I do that? Oh yeah, OF COURSE I did because it's right!" I <3 my mom.

Re: UO Thursday

  • Small annoyance: being called "Mrs." in the classroom. I worked really hard for those three letters after my name, so "Dr." or "Professor" are both appropriate. I also don't mind being called by my first name in the classroom. I run a fairly casual ship after the first few weeks and see my work with students as collaborative. "Ms." would technically be correct as well. But "Mrs" is the one title that ISN'T my name. I kept my maiden name, and most students know this.

The problem is, while it grates on me, it's a small thing and I can't think of how to politely correct those few who insist on calling me that. without breaking the rhythm of the class or embarassing them. I'd also feel better if they called ANY of my male colleagues "Mr." but, alas, they don't.

Oh well...if that's the most of my concerns with student interaction I'd say I'm pretty damn lucky.

Wow. I ALWAYS refer to my professors as "Dr." and nothing less. Sometimes they insist I call them by first name but they must insist. You worked hard for your letters, I honestly support that.

I was the same way in college - it was either Dr. or Professor. Definitely not Ms. or Mrs. I totally support what you're saying...you worked hard for those letters. Weird that students wouldn't call you by either of those titles.

  • I saw a story last night about a restaurant in PA who is now banning kids under 6. I will admit that I'm a little annoyed by this, but I don't blame him. Some parents just let their kids run around and act like wild banshees, and I wouldn't want to eat dinner in that type of atmosphere. If JJ gets out of control while we're out in public, either I give him a toy or we leave - I'm not going to stay and interrupt other people's dinner. It's embarrassing to me...but not every parent feels that way, which is why bans like this happen. I side with the owner on that one.

  • This is back to my Hyundai Elantra post from ages ago.....

I love those cars - I test drove one (finally) and they are super cute.  Sunday was the two year anniversary of having purchased our hell hole house.....we are two years (DH claims three) ahead of our original renovation plan.  We would like to have the kitchen done by Thanksgiving next year but really we are hoping by next summer.  We went over our budget with a fine toothed comb and it was determined that if we want to have the cash to get the kitchen done early next year, my BMW has to go.  For one thing, I don't like it.  For another, it is a tad ridiculous to spend that much money on a car I don't really like.  For another another, the kitchen is way more important to me and like all the other renos in the house, I am not going to "cheapen it up" to get it completed quicker and I am willing to go to the ends of the earth to get it done exactly the way I want it.  Finally, for my last another, we really want to pay for it all in cash.

So I am selling the BMW and getting an Elantra.

Judge all you want.   While you are judging, I will be meeting with an architect.  Big Smile

This gets on my nerves as well. I have a J.D. and we aren't typically called "Dr." except in academic settings. Students call me by my first name all the time and I always feel kind of asshatty if I try to correct them. I don't except if I adjunct a class and the chair has indicated we should not be on a first name basis with students.  I'm in higher ed admin so maybe it's more casual, but there are other J.D.s on campus that get called "Dr." and pretty much any male with a doctorate is referred to by title. I feel like Rodney Dangerfield "I get no respect!"

Well, you know me. I'll support almost anything if it can be bought in cash. ;) Have you ever read The Millionaire Next Door? I'm reading it right now. It'll make you feel even better about parting with the Beamer.

Since I don't even like the Beamer, I don't even care or feel sad about it.  At the same time, you have seen my kitchen....I can't wait until it is oh so beautiful.  Of course, I will have 900 posts b!tching about how awful the construction is but when it is done - oh when it is done.  I hope I can keep the rest of my spending under control until then...

  • Along the lines with Amanjay and OULaw03... when you work so frigging hard for a degree it matters. Working on my doctorate is so time consuming, sometimes I feel so overworked that I literally want to scream... in saying this, I will be THAT professor that wants/will be referred to with title. With the work going into it, I earned it.

I am disappointed with the debt ceiling talks. I am even more disappointed that many of my friends have no clue about what is going on with it.

Didn't you use this for your UO last week?  No fair using it twice! Stick out tongue

Why should it even matter to these people what their students' sexual orientation is? They're there to teach them the same facts and skills they teach all their other students, not preach religion or their own personal morals to them. (Sidenote: AW! I correctly used all 3 versions of "there" in that sentence!)

This isn't an UO, but I am so pissy now that I try to avoid people who can't handle my pissy/sarcastic sense of humor because I don't want them to think of me as the b-tchy pregnant woman. But it is true. And really, it is that I just don't hold back with my opinions.

OMG, did I? I'm obviously still hung up on it, then. The part about calling my mom happened Sunday night, though, so that's at least new.

I just finished a 3-hour graduate course in 7 days. I need a little slack as all the days are running together and the only thing I can hear in my head is Mozart's 39th symphony....halp me.
