Couples get-together

DH and I are hosting our first couples get together.  We plan on grilling some food, and having some drinks.. but what can we do to keep the party exciting.. any tips to keep it from getting boring - to keep conversations going.  We are bringing together people who don't all know each other.

Re: Couples get-together

  • Definitely have something like cornhole set up outside. you play in teams, so it's a good way for people to interact and chat. You could also have a table set up for drinking games (flip cup and/or beer pong)...not sure about your group, but I know with us and our friends, we still play those (we are late 20s-mid30s).

Personally I have found that people kind of figure it out for themselves when going to a party where they don't know everyone. They are either social or not. More times than not, I find that people are social and you just find commonality. I wouldn't stress too much about having "activities" or anything.

  • If it's a group that doesn't know each other and I'm worried about conversation lags, I usually have games (oh so casually) placed around the area.

And not necessarily structured games but those "loaded questions" type cards, or a funny mind teaser thing... just a few items that are conversation pieces. My deck of celebrity mug shot poker cards that I "accidentally" leave out are generally a hit.

Since it sounds like this might include being outside I'd have a few balls laying around (if there is ANYTHING round within 20 yards of DH he WILL turn it into a game). Also music going and a stack of CDs or something.

Like pp said, I wouldn't worry too much about planned activities - just have a few things on hand people can be doing to help get conversation going.

  • Apples to Apples, Loaded Questions and Catchphrase are great party games if you're looking for anything like that.

  • I love Apples to Apples in situations like this. For outside, things like croquet are fun.
