Tell me about living in Pensacola
Hi, mind if I butt in for a minute? ;-)
I'm interested in knowing a little about Pensacola. It's on my short list of where to move to next year. I've never been there (closest was to Panama City a whole bunch of years ago), but I'm planning on taking a short trip there this fall.
I'm a single 33 year old with no kids, and work as an assistant office manager in a sales environment making around $34k/yr. What's the job market like? Will I feel out of place with all of the families and military?
Tell me whatever you like, please and thank you :-)
Re: Tell me about living in Pensacola
Im single and I have to admit that even though I live here, Pensacola is NOT on my place to live short list. The job market here is tough, do you already have some prospects out here?
There's not a lot to do unless you like the movies or the beach. Shopping is slim and there's not much culture here, if you know what I mean.
I love the beach and this is where my family lives, those are the only things keeping me here.
ETA: Its obviously a military town, but its not overwhelming at all.
We were there for about a year. I really liked it there. Granted, we are a military family with two small kids, so we are in very different situations. There are lots of festivals, etc., Mobile, AL isn't too far away and there's lots of history to see there. The beaches are beautiful (when they're not covered in oil!). I worked from home with the job I had in Virginia, so I didn't have to look for a job while there, which was great because the little I did look, there were NO decent jobs. (I am defense contractor- business processes, not technical.)
If I were 33 and single, I'd rather live in a bigger city with more nightlife/social scene. But, that's just my opinion.
You can drive to Orange Beach or Destin for outlet shopping but you basically have to make a day of it. It's not like you can just run after work like other cities.
What puts it on my short list is that it meets most all of the requirements I have for moving halfway across the country and away from my family:
Within a half hour of a beach
As far north as possible to be as close to my family as I can be and still be near the beach (a beach that?s not as ugly as some of the ones on the Atlantic)
A city of less than 100k people
Where I can get a small apartment for around $600 a month
Small town atmosphere (my city has nearly a million people, and I?m more of a homebody so I don?t need nightlife)
I just found out that Pensacola State has the program I want to go back to school for eventually, for much cheaper than what I can go here, too.
It sounds like it may fit your qualifications then!
H is from Pensacola and still has family there and this is just their experience, but there is zero job market. Like zilch. I don't know about for the type of position you're looking for, but a bunch of them have said it's just a wasteland job wise. No growth whatsoever.
From my limited experience visiting his family, the beach is great (there's a strip of beach bars that are a blast) and parts of downtown are pretty nice, but there's is a whooooole lot more of Pensacola that's not the beach or downtown.
Just my two cents.
Like LB said there's a lot to Pensacola that's not the beach or downtown. For $600/mo you're not going to be close to the beach but really it's not a far drive from anywhere in town.
Yeah, I don't need to be super close to the beach, just within a half hour or so drive. I have a house here that I would need to rent out, so I wouldn't want to spend too much on rent for the first year or so. I think I'm going to try to be down there for 4 or 5 days at the end of September to get a feel for the town, maybe poke around a little jobwise. I don't know, even though I haven't been there, I get a good vibe about it, from what I've researched so far.
Thanks for all of your help! I may be back with more questions, so I appreciate it!
