Private Health Insurance

Can anyone point me in the right direction to begin looking for private health insurance?  I googled but it gives you hundreds of options and I don't even know where to begin.  We are currently insured but my husband has been offered a great opportunity to be self employed but with a new baby I need to weigh our options first.

 TIA!

Re: Private Health Insurance

  • We've used ehealthinsurance.com - good luck!
  • we used ehealthinsurance based on duchess and others recommendation.  we really liked the site and were able to really narrow down our choices.  I was pregnant at the time so DH had to wait until after the baby was born to actually get the coverage.

we ended up with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and now have DH and DS covered on his policy.  Its a pretty decent "high deductible" plan ($1200 I think) with HSA for a very reasonable price.  We've been happy with them so far (had it about a year).

  • Previous posters have suggested what I believe is the best vehicle for obtaining PHI on the market.

If you have questions about the specific plans feel free to ask.

  • Great!  Let me look into that website and I'll follow up if I need help with the plans.

We found a plan through ehealthinsurance as well.  The kids and I have a private plan through Cigna.  We've been with them for about 4 years now.  Although the deductible is high, the coverage is pretty good and we've never had any issues with claims.

  • Ahhh, it's all so overwhelming.  I'll have to sit down for awhile and delve through it all. I need to decide what options work best for our family.

Am I incorrect in assuming that none of these plans cover maternity?  We just had a baby but would like one more in a few years.

This is correct.  The only way a delivery is covered is if you have an emergency c-section (at least this was the case with our private insurance).

You aren't going to find a TX plan that covers maternity any time soon.  There were one or two on the market but the cost was crazy compared to the ones without.  You'd be better off negotiating the cost for an out of pocket delivery with your doctor and hospital.  Remember you can put money into an FSA or HSA (which I prefer) that year and pay with pre-tax dollars.  You can actually start putting money into the HSA now if you choose a high deductible plan for you or your family.  No need to spend the money (although it's for all medical expenses.)  Just use it as a medical savings account for when you have big payments like deliver.

Sorry I have so many questions.  Does the money you put in an FSA or HSA rollover?  We never had this at my previous employer so I'm clueless.

The HSA is awesome. We put money into it and then used the debit card/checkbook to pay for many PG-related medical expenses.

There's no "use it or lose it" with an HSA.

  • Oh I see, that sounds great then!
