Reviews for wedding gown shopping in DSM?

My SIL is getting married!!!  She will be here for the kid's birthdays and we are going gown shopping together.  Can anyone give me reviews on the following places?  We won't have time to go to all of them, so I wanted to narrow it down a bit.

Weddings By Design (I used them and was happy, but I'm looking for other's reviews)

Schaffer's in JC

Bridal Boutique on E 6th

Bridal Connection in Ankeny

TIA!

Re: Reviews for wedding gown shopping in DSM?

  • I went to 4 different places and would HIGHLY recommend NOT going on a Saturday. We went on Saturday and Sunday and Saturdays are crazy busy. They still try to help everyone, but some of the dresses you don't get to see because other girls have them in their rooms.

-David's Bridal: The sales rep was really nice, but really slow. We had picked about 8 dresses we wanted to try, and she kept bringing them 1 by 1 (with about 10 minutes in between each one). I didn't like that the dressing rooms were so tiny so no one could be in there with me and I got bored waiting. I finally put my sweatshirt on with my underskirting and sat out in the waiting place with the rest of my girls! Prices were great though and they have an ok selection.

-Bridal Connection: Experience was good, although I didn't think they had a "ton" to choose from.  It was also my first stop so I didn't really know how to look at the dresses in bags and tell what they looked like lol.  I liked that they gave me colored rings to place on the dresses I liked.  The sales rep was also very good.

    - Weddings by Design:  Experience was 100x better on Sunday vs Saturday.  I found a "top dress" there on Saturday and went back Sunday to try it on again.  This is where i get my advice from up top.  I found tons of other dresses that I didnt see the day before.  One of these actually ended up being MY dress that I purchased!  In addition, they sent me a box of CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES from edible arrangements as a thank you!!!  I loved working with them.  My only complaint would be that they ordered the dress too big (I think this is common). However, I've been losing weight so it probably would have needed to be taken in anyway.

    - The Bridal Boutique (downtown dsm):  The woman here was veryyy nice! I loved that it was so small and they have some really unique dresses!  I didn't find my dress there, but would have loved to give them my business!!!

    - I would have liked to go to Schaffers, but love love love my dress from Weddings By Design.

    - I would avoid Staceys (sorry for anyone who got their dress there) I have heard nothing but problems with their dresses and alterations issues.

I have heard this about the Bridal Connection over and over from clients.  No personal experience though.

  • my sister & i both got our dresses at schaffers and were happy with them. they are quite a bit more expensive than other placess that offer the same lines. (discovered after the fact)

bridal connection - currently working with them for a friend/client and have been extremely impressed with their customer service. they also just expanded, so might have more selection now. some of the girls are a bit...flighty...but they have gone the extra mile for my friend. her sister is plus sized (28w) and they didn't have anything that she could even try on for a BM dress. they ordered the dress my friend thought she wanted for BM dress without any $$ obligation to the bride. they said that they would get a lot of use out of it and were happy to do that.

no issues with the fit/alterations at bridal connection either. have other friends/clients who have been happy there.

i've not heard good things about stacey's from the bridal side of things.

  • Weddings By Design: I was a bridesmaid in a wedding last year, and we all got our dresses there.  We had an appointment on a Saturday and experienced good service. The staff assisted us when requested but didn't hover.  My dress arrived when they said it would & prices were about what I'd seen other places.

Schaffer's in JC:  This is where I got my wedding dress...and I was happy with every step of the process.  The person helping me at my appointment was Hope, and she was AWEsome.  They have a terrific selection; I felt like I was able to try on a number of options - even as a "bigger" girl.  I ended up buying off the rack, and they held the dress for me at the shop until it was ready. I was very pleased overall with Schaffer's.

Bridal Boutique on E 6th: No experience with this one...

Bridal Connection in Ankeny: We ordered the bridesmaids dresses for my wedding from the Bridal Connection.  I was really so-so about this place.  Our initial appointment to look at & try on options was fine.  The dresses took longer to arrive than we had been told, which was really frustrating.  I didn't try on gowns there, but their selection/sizes didn't seem as good as it was at a few of the other places.

Have fun shopping with your SIL!

  • I had a top notch experience at Schaffers. I think they have a great staff and really beautiful dresses!
