Deciding between two pediatric groups... any help?

Hi! I am due with my first little one in September and the H and I are trying to decide who we'd like for the pediatrician. It's so hard because how do we know how they are with kids?? Anyway, these are the two I'm deciding between, any thoughts? Suggestions? Advice? Thanks!

Des Moines Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic (the one on Hickman and Beaver, I believe). Does anybody know if this one is affiliated with any of the hospital systems?

Mercy Downtown Pediatric Clinic- It's the one behind Mercy, on Laurel.

Re: Deciding between two pediatric groups... any help?

  • We go to DSM Pedi on Hickman/Beaver and I love them. Our main pedi is Dr.Petersen and if she's busy we see Dr.Secory (Mr.All-His ;-)) He is great too (and not too bad on the eyes either. haha-sorry!) . We have always been happy going there and also, they really remember us. It helps when you feel welcome and comfortable at the office.

At each appt they are very thorough and we've only had to wait more than a few minutes once. I'm kind of a crazy, over concerned mom too and they are completely understanding. I've even called the on-call pedis a few times and I was happy with our experience there too.

    That's just my two cents!

  • I go to DSM Pediatric (their Clive location) and I like it.  Our favorite is Dr. S, he's great with kids and always takes the extra time to answer all of our questions.  Dr. Amy is really good too!  I believe they have permissions at all of the area hospitals, or at least at both Mercy and Methodist.  They are very knowledgeable and have provided great care for our son.

Sometimes there can be a significant wait in the exam room until the doctor comes in but I think this is pretty typical at all of the pediatric clinics as those appointments tend to take longer and sick kids wanting to be seen that day take up any built in extra schedule time.  Making appointments in the early morning or right after the lunch hour helps cut down on this.

All-His might be a better one to weigh in on the hospital permissions.  ;-)

  • haha Jess, no apologies needed, that is sweet of you to say. :)  The funny thing is that, according to the front desk staff, many parent couples fight over who to see for their appointment - with the dads wanting to see Dr. Petersen and the moms wanting to see my hubby. (Dr. Secory for OP).  Ha!  I think Amy is really pretty and she is a great doctor too.

For the OP - DSM peds (who have locations in clive and ankeny along w/ beaverdale) has priviledges at all the area hospitals, so they will come and round on any baby born at any hospital, and also take care of their own patients who are admitted to a general medical floor at any hospital, rather than admitting to the hospitalists (NICU and PICU patients are managed by hospitalists).  Many patients like this continuity and the familiar face.

Like syd said, my only criticism of the group is the wait time (we arent' immune to it either) at certain times of the day.  Different practices have to pick different priorities and this group has chosen to be very accommodating to patient requests for appointments and to spend sufficient time answering all questions.  This means when you call for an appointment they will fit you in and will do everything they can to get you who you want to see, but the tradeoff is that sometimes you have to wait awhile to be seen.  Adam (dr. secory) does his very best to balance the need to keep moving to stay on schedule with the need to give each patient the time and attention they deserve.

  • We go DM Peds, at teh Clive location (been to Beaverdale as well).  We try to only see Dr. Secory, but have seen everyone in the group at some point.  I love everything about them.  The staff is amazing, the doctors are great, and we LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Secory.  He always takes time to interact with the kid, answer all questions, and relates really well to the parents.  We do sometimes wait a while, but any time it's been what I would term "excessive" the doctor (DOCTOR himself) has explained and apologized.  Makes it ok, as I know that some time I will be that person causing the delay.

  • We go to DSM Ped in Beaverdale.  It is close to my house, and the doctors are all great!  I am another one of those neurotic moms, and I don't feel dumb calling them (about anything and everything) and they calm me and never make me feel dumb or crazy.  :)

  • We go to the Mercy Central Peds behind Mercy. I like that they are so close to the hospital, we've been sent over 3 times now so that is good. The wait time can be a little long but other days we get right in or out. We see Dr. Salow most of the time but he is very populr I guess and sometimes we can't get in with him. Dr El-Dadah and Shamrae (a nurse practitioner) are our backups. They all answer all of our questions and the nurses are nice too.

  • THANK YOU!!! How incredibly refreshing to hear personal experiences and advice. I really am grateful. My H was actually really wanting to pick that practice anyway, so I think I will go with his pick! I really was clueless.

One thing that was important to me was that the group that we chose, that they come to the hospital when the baby is born. I wasn't real thrilled with the hospitalist idea.

I guess one last question. Do I need to do anything before baby arrives? Should I call them and set anything up, or just let the hospital know who we've chosen?

  • I'm sure the office probably welcomes an initial call to setup baby as a new client, or at least a headsup on due date, etc.  Our son came 4 weeks early and caught us by surprise so we had not done this yet.  Instead we just put down Dr. Secory's name from DSM Pediatrics on my hospital intake forms and someone from the practice came right out after he was born.  If for some reason this doesn't get done before baby makes an appearance, don't worry. :-)

  • We also go to DSM Pediatrics and are really happy with them. I went to college with Dr. Secory, plus had many great recommendations from the girls here. I don't really mind the wait since I know the doctor will spend just as much time with us if it is necessary. I would rather go to a place that is attentive to patients than feel like I am being rushed out the door by the clock. We did the same thing sydic mentioned and just put down Dr. Secory and DSM Pediatrics as N's doctor and they did her check up when they were on rounds. Adam even dropped by my hospital room to say hi :o)

  • Another vote for Des Moines Peds and Dr. Secory. We have been very pleased with the practice and all the docs we have seen there with the exception of one. Dr. S. is our primary doctor that we make appts for the kiddos with and he is awesome! We have had to wait awhile at a couple appointments which can be a bit frustrating but like others have said, we understand that it is because the practice makes a point to accommodate call ins, etc. so we try to be patient :) Like others have said, we just let them know when we delivered both kiddos that we wanted to be seen by the Des Moines Peds group and they rounded the next morning :)

  • I will throw a vote out there for Mercy Pediatrics, We see Dr. Eldahda. LOVE HIM, he knows Lyla and I but name without being prompted, and is great about keeping tabs on her while we work a hemotologist @ blank. Also, LOVE the hours, evening and weekend! I did go to Des Moines Peds when we first moved to DSM but had a much different experience then the other ladies describe. I always felt like I was bothering the receptionist and rushed by the doctors (I did always like Dr. Secory!) I have never regretted my decision to switch.
