Would you stay at a job knowing you won't get a raise?

Just curious, do you expect to get a raise every year (or most years) or do you plan to reach a point where you know you won't get any raise?

Have you reached that point in your company?

Does it make you want to look at other jobs or are you satisfied with what you get paid?

Re: Would you stay at a job knowing you won't get a raise?

  • I generally expect to get a raise every/most years, but I imagine if I stayed at my company long enough and my role didn't grow, I'd eventually stop getting raises.

If I were to reach a point where I was no longer getting raises, my decision as to whether to look for another job would depend on whether I could actually get paid more somewhere else (if I'm paid above market, that might be hard to do), and whether I really liked employer and my job.

I'm of the mindset that one should always keep an eye out for other job opportunities even if you're paid well and have a great job, you just never know what else is out there unless you look.

  • Yes and I am.  I mean I eventually will get a promotion but the way things are going with the state I doubt a COLA is in my immediate future (the last one was over two years ago).  I don't want to start over.  The benefits are good.  I like my job.  The job market sucks for lawyers.

  • No. We were just informed that if all goes as planned we will never ever get another raise. Including cost of living, no raise at all. In addition to an increase in all current contributions.

For me there is no opportunity for promotion, perhaps my opinion would be different otherwise.

  • I expect a raise if the company does well. If not, all bets are off.

If I've reached a point in my position where I am at the top of the pay band, I should be ready to move up to a new position.

I did not reach that at any point in any of the companies where I worked.

I look at jobs no matter what. There's no commitment involved in it. And the possibility of no raise would make me look more.

  • If I had no prospects for another job I'd stay.  No raise is better than ZERO pay.

  • I used to work for the state government and pay raises were not expected to keep up with inflation.  I had no intention of leaving.  DH thought I was crazy.

As it happened I now work in corporate and I got a sizable raise after year 2 (year 1 was flat across the company) which was a merit raise.  I have to say not that I'm on the other side of the fence - raises are sure nice to have!

I haven't reached the point where I won't move up any more but if and when I do it is possible that I'll stay if I enjoy my work enough because I've reached a level of pay where I'm fairly comfortable and my quality of life won't increase even if my salary does.
