Do you eat cake batter?

I have always been a cake/brownie batter eater.  It's friggin delicious so I never thought twice about it.  It was a big deal to lick the spoon when my mom made something when we were growing up!!

While I was pregnant, I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't eat it because it has raw eggs in it.  I had never thought about it like that before.  So now I'm curious, do you eat raw cookie dough, cake/brownie batter, etc?  Do you think it's gross because it has raw eggs in it?

Re: Do you eat cake batter?

  • I think the better question is -- who DOESN'T eat it?  I haven't been eating that stuff while I've been pregnant, but normally I wouldn't think twice.

  • Normally, all the time!  Now that I'm pregnant, it's one of the few things I'm restricting myself on.  That and alcohol pretty much sums it up actually.  Baking is not half as much fun now though, lol.

  • Yep, I eat it all.  I'm aware of the potential dangers of the raw egg, but I do it anyway.  :o)

P.S.  there are egg-free recipes for cookie dough around that are actually intended to be eaten raw.

  • YUM!!! Is all I have to say.

  • My mom is a huge germ-a-phobe, and she scared me out of it when I was a kid.  I have never been able to get over it. :(
  • I eat it, not alot, gets to sweet for me after awhile, but I don't think about it having raw eggs.  Though I didn't during both pregnancies.  DD loves the batter now when we bake, she can't wait for it!

I posted last month about a store in the Chicago suburbs that I went to that you can eat the dough because it doesn't have egg in it.  I bought a cookie dough sandwich which was 2 cookies w/cookie dough in the middle.  Delicious, but sweet.  I brought one back for Ritzy who I think ate in 2 bites!  They do ship, so those who are pregnant can eat it:  Cookie Dough Creations in Naperville, IL

  • I don't make a big ole bowl of cake/brownie batter just to eat it, but I do use the spatula to scrape the sides and eat what is leftover Smile
  • Most definitely yes!!  Now I want some cake batter and cookie dough!
  • Yup - eating the batter is the best part about baking, well that and cookies hot from the oven.

And being pregnant hasn't stopped me from indulging in a few licks of the bowl - I live on the edge lol.

lol - I like this. And btw, how are you feeling?!?! You're so close!

Yes, I am a huge batter-eater (That sounds strange), except not now b/c of being pregnant. But anyways, I love brownie mix and chocolate chip cookie dough the most! I don't think I've ever ate cake batter though? Guess I'll have to try it sometime ;)

This!  I love to lick the spoon or the beaters :)  I didn't hear about the pregnancy rule until late in the pregnancy, so by that time I had already done it plus inhaled a bunch of homemade ice cream, made with raw eggs.

  • Absolutely yes.  Its the best part of baking.  I especially love cake batter.  I had a friend growing up who's mother would never let them have the batter because of the eggs.  I always thought she was crazy Big Smile

  • I love love love cookie dough, cake batter & brownie batter. Usually I'll mix everything but the eggs, take a little bowl out for me and then mix the eggs in. Sometimes I'll go a little crazy and just eat it with the eggs in. Not too long ago I made a cookie dough dip that was excellent, almost as good as the real thing.

    Hahaha.. exactly!!

Same here though.  Normally I would have no problems with it as long as I knew the eggs I was using were fresh.  Now that I'm pregnant though, I avoid it.

LoL.. that thing was flippin' delicious.  I guarantee you at least a pound of my pregnancy weight gain came from that thing, and yet I'd eat ten more if I could! Big Smile
