Two negotiating points - any advice?

I got a great offer earlier this week.

I have two issues I'd like to negotiate, though:

1. this company came to me and recruited me. The posting they sent me offered a salary of $X, but the offer came in at $Y ($6500 below $X).  They offered me 20% over my current salary (well, before I was laid off a week ago), but still, why not the posted amount? Is it acceptable/reasonable to question this?

2.  They offer 2 weeks vacation to all employees under 5 years. I want 3.  Is this something that can be successfully negotiated? How? I have another offer coming in within a couple of weeks that offers 3, they just can't commit today. So can I use that as my bargaining chip - ie say I have a competing offer that offers 3 weeks?

I'm in danger of being too nice here, so any advice is helpful!

Re: Two negotiating points - any advice?

  • 1. IMO yes. "The posted salary was $X, and I'd like that compensation for this position."

    2. I'd say I wanted 3 weeks of vacation, and ask if that was negotiable. They may make it an either/or with #1 though.

  • Ditto to PP - definitely negotiate both pieces. I have a cousin who is a pretty high powered corporate recruiter and she told me a general rule is that recruited candidates can negotiate salary up to 20% and non-recruited candidates up to 10%.

Some companies have very strict vacation policies based on years of service, so they may not be able to give you 3 weeks, but you could ask for some "floating holidays" or something like that.

  • Well, they matched the salary posted, so I got that. They can't break precedent with the vacation, but I am happy with the increase in salary so I can't complain!

  • Great! I'm glad it worked out.
