Sounds like you might know a bit about vacationing in Maine, from the thankful post. I've never been there, and we're renting a house in Wells (I think) for our vacation in a few weeks. Any good tips you could give us or things I should know that are different from the usual beach vacation?
Re: **tomandcourt** re Maine
are there are nice resorts up there? similar to the Homestead?
I wish I had more info to help you! Unfortunately I always go to the same place every year, about an hour north of where you'll be staying, so I don't have a lot to tell you.
Um, let's see . . .
Beaches are rocky, not really sandy, and the water is cold. But still fun!
It gets pretty chilly at night, so it's good to pack layers even if the weather is calling for warm days.
Mosquitoes can be pretty bad too, but it helps to NOT wear anything heavily scented (e.g., perfume, hair product, deodorant). Not that you shouldn't wear deodorant, just not too perfume-y.
Eat lots of lobster! Serious Eats just did a slideshow of the best lobster rolls in New England, I bet you can find some near Wells.
You'll also be about an hour south of Freeport, which is basically a big town full of outlets--including the original L.L. Bean--that's always fun.
