Flip flops at work??

Sorry but I cringe when I see people wearing flip flops at work. I think it looks sloppy and inappropriate, no matter how casual the environment may be. I mean, you're at work. Take a little pride in yourself! I wear sandals/open toes on occasion, but they're always dressy.

Just something to talk about, discuss!!

Short article below from Today Show website:

By Allison Linn, senior business writer

It?s summertime and the living is easy, but that doesn?t mean your co-workers want to hear the thwack-thwack of your flip-flops coming down the cubicle farm.

A new survey from staffing firm Adecco finds that around three-fourths of Americans think it?s OK for both men and women to dress more casually at work in the summer.

But there?s a big difference between ?office casual? and ?what I?m wearing to the beach after work.?

Flip-flops are the biggest office ?don?t,? with 71 percent of adults surveyed saying the footwear is inappropriate for work. That?s slightly more than those who think miniskirts are inappropriate office wear, according to the Adecco survey.

Strapless tops and dresses were also slightly lower on the list, with 66 percent saying that they were inappropriate.

A little over half said that shorts are also an office no-no.

Are bare toes really more inappropriate than bare shoulders? It appears that it?s not so much the toes as the footwear itself that is such an office annoyance. Only 31 percent of respondents were opposed to open-toed shoes in general.

It should also be noted that far more women than men are against miniskirts and strapless tops.

The telephone survey of 1,000 adults was conducted in June.

Re: Flip flops at work??

  • I wear them but it is only me and one other person here and he wears crocs (all the time).  We have no customers or anyone coming in or out of our office so I wear what ever I want.  I do hate the flip flop noise though, and I try to avoid "clicking."
  • I've never worn flip flops ever in my life (hate something b/t my toes). IDK the mom I babysit for wears them occasionally. She has super cute summer dresses and I think she looks fine. (Maybe I should say trendy?) They are not your cheapy Old Navy ones though. But speaking of not wearing them my oldest dd has some laying by the front door and I've "tried" wearing them to the mail box and back to get a feel for them .. haha!
  • I think it depends where you work. I used to wear regular (ie cheap old navy) flip flops on Fridays and something similar to the picture below every day in the summer. We also did not have clients come in the office. I would have never worn a tube style top but a few did wear tasteful tanks.

  • When I worked at the call center I wore them all the time, we had a summer dress code and you could wear anything you wanted basically, even shorts and tank tops. I did occasionally wear them on casual Fridays with jeans when I was teaching. I don't think they are appropriate for an office with a business casual dress code, although the dressier ones can work with some outfits
  • I wear them almost every day in the summer...  but I work alone, in my own office.  There's one other person who works in my location but he's strictly maintenance and I rarely see him.  I also wear whatever I want as far as clothes most days, so I can even wear sweatpants if I wanted to...  We don't even have air conditioning (my building is literally converted stables from a horse farm) so it's also extremely hot in the warmer months (it's 85 inside right now), so I need to try to feel as comfortable as possible.
  • Definitely not flip flips at my work!  We have a business casual dress code...but more on the business side than casual.  We can wear sandals (sans hose even), but no 'thong' type sandals.  Totally fine with that.  And honestly, so many people have no business exposing their toes in public anyway so a ban on sandals period in the workplace I'd be fine with.

Too...bare shoulders, too short skirts, ample visible cleavage, etc. also very inappropriate in my workplace.
