Anyone know what's cool in the world of 6 year old girls?

Our adopted kid for the back to school care package is a 6 year old girl. I've always gotten kids from the preschool before so I knew them/knew what to get.

I have the basic list of supplies her school requires but I also need to get clothes, shoes, etc.

I'm a little overwhelmed. What's cool to 6 year olds? (And, if any teachers want to weigh in on special school supplies they think would be good, I'm all for that too.)

Re: Anyone know what's cool in the world of 6 year old girls?

  • You are so sweet to do this for a little munchkin!  I don't know about your schools, but out here in California our students have to bring everything - even tissue!

Justice is definitely the hot place to shop at my elementary.  Look online and you can usually find a 40% off coupon for your entire purchase.  Headbands have also made a huge comeback - the ones with the big flowers...Charming Charlie comes to mind.  Target is also pretty popular for kids' clothes - I'm always seeing my girls' dresses when I walk by that section.

If you have to get pencils, get Dixon Ticonderoga brand.  Most of the others are crap.  Also, pencil grips and the little erasers that fit on the end of pencils aren't usually on the list but are very helpful.

Make sure the pencil box is really big and durable.  I can't tell you how many times each week a student will drop their pencil box from their desk and the contents spill out all over the floor.  Personally, I love it when the kids bring one of those plastic shoe bins and decorate it with their name, etc.

They also sell these great crayons now called twistables.  They basically work like an eyeliner pencil that twists.

Make sure the shoes are closed toed.  Most of my kids wear tennis shoes each day so they don't forget them for PE.  They sell these really cute sketchers with sequins etc. all over them.  Justice has cute shoes too but I don't know how durable they are.

  • Ditto Justice my niece and younger cousin love that store. My 8 year old niece is also big into any of the afternoon Disney showes - Hannah Montana, Suite Life etc.

Oh - and Littlest Pet Shop.

This is a perfect response! I agree with everything. Is she a girly girl? She might like some cute nail polish.

  • Our flower girl is now 6, and she loves Taylor Swift (vom), Justin Bieber (VOM), and Hello Kitty.  I would think anything pink, sparkly, and with cute animals on it would be appropriate.

My 6 y/o niece started to sing a Justin Bieber song in my presence... I told her those were bad words when Auntie is around and she can't sing it, then she moved on to Miley Cyrus and the same speech was given!

  • I agree with the Justice clothing store for the girls.

Quite a few of our first grade girls also became obsessed with the Junie B Jones book series, it was a big seller at the book fair.

Magic Treehouse too, but only if she's reading.

  • I'm going to assume this girl is lower income. In my community it would be very weird for a girl to wear things from Justice -- my niece on the other hand lives there. I'd be careful about things that scream a particular brand or store because it might single her out too much. I just worry about it being awkward.

And of course a 6 year old can read! Especially if she had a mean, slave driver Kindergarten teacher like me!

I am a firm believer that every child can read, however, we also know that not every child is ready to read chapter books in 1st grade.  We're heavy believers in my grade level in reading "just right" books, and not all of my students were ready for that in 1st grade.

I was joking. Obviously that didn't come across.

  • Definitely Magic Treehouse and Junie B. Jones for books.

    Glitter crayons

glue sticks - ones that are purple first so they can see where they glued

pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top to collect shavings)

Fur Real Friends are popular too...and I think Strawberry shortcake has made a comeback.

But really...glitter and princesses are always tops!

  • Children's Place & Old Navy have cute stuff for back to school, too if you're worried about the girl being out of place with Justice stuff, just fyi!

I assumed you were, and I know you're a great k teacher.  It just irks me when parents brag that their kid can read ___ when they obviously can't.  Just wanted to make sure my point was understood.
