Need A Little Help

We have finally found a closer daycare provider for El, that we both felt comfortable with and who is reasonably priced as well as loving towards El.

So this is where I need help! OY! I have NO idea what to tell my current daycare lady! I LOVE her! And she's done been amazing with El and taken such good care of my baby. I hate to leave and we wouldn't have, but they moved and it's just too far for us to drive. Plus with gas being as expensive as it, it's all around more expensive! I'm seriously cying with the thought of telling her this.

How would you tell your daycare provider you were leaving.

Re: Need A Little Help

  • I would probably just sit down with her when I picked up one day and explain the situation.  It sounds like she has done a great job and she deserves to be notified face to face.  I'm sure she will understand that since they've moved it has been an additional burden on you guys and you can talk about when El will be moving to the new daycare so your current provider can try to find another child to take her place.  You can offer to give recommendations if needed, that might help to.  I'm sure your provider will understand.  Good luck, this sounds like it will be a tough break-up!

OKAY! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks/feels like this is a break-up! I guess I sort of AM breaking a relationship

That's exaclty what I thought of when reading your OP.  This is a break-up and it will be so hard.  Maybe take some tissues with you just in case one of you tears up?

  • I would tell her the truth, the move is too far to drive, especially with gas prices. Good luck!

  • I've always dreaded these conversations, and it's even more difficult when the provider is amazing and you don't want her to think it's anything related to her care.  She is already aware of your extra effort (drive, gas $, etc), and she will understand you have to do what is best for your family.  She may have went through the same emotional process in knowing her move may exclude some of her daycare kids (??).

I would try to catch her at the end of the day, hopefully when not too many kids or parents are around (just to have more privacy and uninterrupted time).  The way you are feeling shows that you do have a great relationship with her daycare -- E's been in good hands.  When I did this with our first (in-home) provider it helped me to say that we want to keep in contact to share how E has grown over time (send Christmas cards, etc).  Then it wasn't a complete break-up  :)
