Where to live in the cities

Hi ladies - my dh might be getting a job working in downtown Mpls.  He would be traveling somewhat regularly.  What 'burbs would you recommend that would be convenient to downtown and to the airport?  We have two LO's so schools will matter down the road.

Re: Where to live in the cities

  • I'd suggest Bloomington, Eagan or maybe Apple Valley.

Eagan and Bloomington would be super close to the airport. Apple Valley is a bit further south, but there are good public transportation options to downtown Mpls via Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA also serves Eagan ... not sure of public transportation options in Bloomington, but I'm sure there are some).

I used to live in Eagan (I'm just SE of Eagan now, in Rosemount), and I really loved Eagan. Tons of housing options, from apartments/condos to townhomes to single family homes of all sizes. Eagan is in school district 196, which is highly sought after. Everything from shopping to banks to restaurants, to downtown St. Paul to downtown Minneapolis is easily accessible and convenient. There are great parks in Eagan and tons of good community ed options for kids.

I really like Rosemount too, but we're way on the edge of the metro area. I drive 28 miles to work at the U of M (next to downtown), which is usually an ok commute, but can be horrendous during a winter storm. We're still in school district 196.

  • I'd suggest Bloomington. Their schools are fabulous. I've taught in several districts as a full-time teacher and a sub and Bloomington is my favorite, and where I would want to send my kids if I had them.
  • Bloomington, Eagan, Inver Grove Heights, Edina, St. Louis Park are all close to Minneapolis and airport

  • Ditto all of the above, with an extra shout out to Apple Valley! I grew up there, and both of my parents traveled a lot for work when I was a kid, and the convenience to the airport was a big factor for them. The schools are pretty great too :-)
  • Ditto all of the above... I'm partial to Eagan, because I live here, though. The commute to downtown is really easy, too. If you're interested in mass transit, there's express busses that will get you downtown in like 20 minutes.
  • I am partial to St. Louis Park. While it's close to downtown and an easy drive, the drive to the airport will be a bit longer - about 25 minutes depending on traffic. I used to drive that way (towards the airport) for my last job and as long as it's early enough it's an easy drive down there.

My neighbors are selling their house right now - PM me if you want the listing :) I love my quiet, family friendly neighborhood and proximity to everything in the west half of the Twin Cities metro.

  • If he will take the bus to downtown,

Bloomington and Eagan will be about a 20-30 min ride

Apple Valley will be about 30-40

St Louis Park (394 and Louisiana) will be about a 15 minute ride

  • Oh, I'd also definitely look into Edina
  • I'm a big fan of the north metro.   I think it depends on how far away you consider "close".  If 20-30 minutes from the airport is okay, it opens up a lot more choices.  I love living in Shoreview.
