Yay for Craig's List!

DH posted his 15-year-old Jetta on CL over the weekend.  He loved that thing but it was going to cost too much to get the A/C fixed, get new tires, etc. and he's gotten his money's worth out of it.

Last night he sold it for $2,000.  Woohoo!

  • Awesome! I looove CL. Yes
  • Awesome!

I sold my last car on Craigslist as well.  It was surprisingly easy/low stress.

  • Nice.  Is he in the market for a new car or are you going to become a one car household?  My H's car is at the end of its lifespan and he wants to buy something new but can't decide what.

The plan was to try the 1-car life for a while.  Since I take the bus to work and DH also has a motorcycle, it should be fine most of the time.  However, we ended up taking my old Civic back from my family who had been using it.  They were looking to unload it anyway and DH will just use it as a commuter car until it dies (that car is 13 years old).

If we do decide to get another car eventually, we've been thinking of getting the Jetta TDI.  It's a diesel engine and gets like 40mpg.  Our friends have one and love it and I've generally heard good reviews on it.  We really want something fuel efficient, though I'd also like something that can carry bigger loads too (initially I wanted a CR-V).  We'll see.

  • This sounds similar to our situation.  I have a Civic that's only three years old.  At the time we bought it I really needed a car but now I can walk to the bus and my H is not travelling for work or working super long hours anymore so I don't need it to go shopping or anything either.  I think we could get away with one car and save not only on paying for a car but the insurance (which is so high).  His car is not in great shape though so he thinks the only way to get a decent amount of money for it would be to take advantage of some type of dealership we'll take anything trade-in incentive.

Also, he is torn between whether he wants to buy a "nice" car or a crossover SUV type thing for hauling stuff.  He would commute in the Civic so gas mileage is not the concern here.  I think either way we would look for something used with low mileage.  I really hate car shopping so I am not in a rush to decide on anything.

  • I hear you on hating car shopping.  One of the big reasons I was hoping they wouldn't total my car after my last accident was that I did not want to go through the buying process again!  Luckily, they paid for repairs instead.

As for selling, again DH's car was 15 years old.  The A/C was gone, there was an intermittent check engine light (that was for something very minor), the red paint was all oxidized and faded, and it needed four new tires.  But the engine was perfectly fine and the car is totally drive-able.  $2,000 was a fair to slightly aggressive KBB price and he got it sold at that in about four days.  You might be surprised at what your DH's car could go for!
