How much do cover letters actually matter?

I feel like I have the qualifications necessary for the jobs that I'm applying for...so when I don't get interviews, that leads me to believe that it's something about my cover letter that's turning them off. How true do you think this is? Or do you think it's just that there are so many people applying for jobs that employers have their pick of any number of fabulous candidates? How much influence does the cover letter have?

It depends on the person doing the hiring.  I think they are a nice opportunity to tell more about YOU.

  • I think this also depends on what you are applying for. I always include a cover letter. It allows you to go a bit in depth about your qualifications and how they will meet their requirements.
  • It's hard to tell if it's your CL, the quality of your resume, or the competition that's getting you out of the running, unless someone tells you.

IMO a well-written CL can do nothing but help you. A poorly written CL can definitely hurt. Having none at all means they have to read your resume cold, and if they request one they're already seeing that you can't follow basic instructions.

  • Oh yes, I always include one, usually whether they ask for one or not. I just find them so tedious to write, and I feel like all cover letters must sound fairly similar, unless you have some extraordinary experience, you know?

  • The cover letters are my favorite part! It is such a chance to brag on yourself and show the employers why they should hire you. For me, it's a chance to show them my personality (while being professional); a way to show them not only do you have the experience and the knowledge, but you have a personality that will be a great addition to their company/office. I think a cover letter can completely outshine a nice resume most of the time.
