*American Girl Bitty Baby - 2Buy or Not2Buy**

The American Girl catalog came the other day in the mail and Sophia (4 turning 5) fell in love with it. She at first wanted a regular American Girl doll but I pointed out that the catalog suggested that she be 8 for one of those. Then she found the Bitty Baby twins. Currently she does a regular Bitty Baby doll that she does play with, however, a $100 doll set to me just seems expensive. $100 was my budget for her bday gift from me, that and a charm for her charm bracelet I started, her father and I are divorcing so she'll receive gifts from him plus from family. You can tell that I can be easily swayed, so in short, would you pay $100 for dolls?

No, I would not pay $100 for 2 dolls, especially if she already has one Bitty Baby doll.

I hope that we don't go down the American Girl doll road (I throw the catalogs away immediately) but if DD does become interested in them I will try and buy them second hand before paying full price for them. They are expensive and then there is so much stuff that goes with them it's out of control.

  • I absolutely would not, in my wildest dreams, pay $100 for a pair of dolls.  I think the entire American Girl line is a racket and it irritates me that it's so darn expensive.  There are a load of dolls available for far less than AG prices.  I'd buy an alternative.

When my daughter was born there was an AG out that shared her nickname and had red hair (which DD had when she was tiny).  My mother bought it for her and it's safe in a box at her house until DD is older, which I'm dreading because I fear it sparking some AG craze for her.

  • Eh, I ADORED my American Girl dolls.  My favorite toys out of my childhood, hands down.  They freak H out now lol so he makes me put them away (something about Childs Play haha.)  But I loved them.   They're good quality and they definitely got me extremely interested in history at a very young age. Both my nieces already have one each (put away in a box, but they have them).   for me they were definitely luxuries - I got one doll for christmas and then would save my money for the accessories and outfits or would get them for Christmas or birthday presents.  They were actually a great lesson in terms of understanding how much things cost and budgeting for what I wanted, even at a young age.

so I guess my opinion is - if your daughter desperately wants them and you WANT her to have them, then I'd do it.  If you have reservations about her having such pricey dolls though (if she's rough with her toys, or she's still a little young, or whatever)  then I'd pass. The nice thing about the AG dolls is that they'll be there next year, and if she still wants them then you can reconsider.

  • I just went and looked at the dolls in question. I don't think i'd pay that much for those. I'd wait a few years and get her one of the historical AG dolls if she still wants one.

So sad that Samantha, Kirsten and Felicity are all retired.  Crying

If you have them you could sell them for $$$.

Uh-huh. Yeah, right. like that will happen. Someone will have to pry my Samantha from my cold dead hands. Stick out tongue

And I never even had Felicity.  My mom did swoop in though the past two years - that's how my nieces got Kirsten and Felicity (Kirsten bc she is blonde and lives in Minnesota, like my niece, and Felicity because she has red hair and we all want my niece to have red hair bc her name is Scarlett lololol)

  • I have Samantha too.  Along with all of the stuff that I had to go with her, my mom is keeping everything packaged and safe for if we ever want it.

  • I would not buy one if she already had one. Why do you need 3 babies???

this does break my heart a bit. When I first started to read the series it was Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly. I think Felicity was next. I loved those books more than life itself and read them all dozens of times. I have a Samantha doll that was never played with. Maybe I should sell her. Mmmhh.

Wouldn't your DH be all over this idea?

Selling things? My husband? Never Wink

I need to get on selling the Star Wars crap the previous owners left here. Perhaps that will be my goal next week. Get them listed on Ebay.

  • My mil bought it for my DD. It is really not worth it. Its head falls off all of the time. It is just attached to the body by a small rope like string.
  • I'm so sad they retired those 3!  I have the original 4. They are in my parents attic collecting dust, but I couldn't sell them.  I loved them too much as a kid! I changed their outfit with each season! :-)  Maybe if I have a little girl, I will pass them on.

That being said...I don't think I would buy the bitty baby twins.  That's a lot of money for 2 dolls that she'll only play with for a year or two, if you're lucky.

  • kira has one, my stepmom bought it.

they just opened an AG store in TYsons.  we'll be going there to do a day and she can get another doll or something if she can continue to not suck her thumb
