your job and responsibilities

This is semi-morbid, BUT....if you were to drop dead, could someone just step into your position and keep things flowing or would there be total chaos?  

For me, it would be the 2nd one.  Sure, eventually they would figure things out, but no one else has even made out paychecks!! ( I do have a detailed list of how to do it, but no one has ever even tried to do it)  Thats  just one instance.

    Honestly what I think would happen is various people at my company would just sort of figure out what are the priority/main/high level things I do that directly impact THEIR work & figure out how to do them, or pass them off to someone else to figure them out.  A lot of the detailed, "extra" stuff I do, honestly no one else would ever bother with.

    My main 2 assets, and I think part of the reason why I've always survived every round of layoffs: 1-I'm SUPER organized/independent (can find or do OR figure out how to find or do pretty much anything at my company); 2-I've worked here so many years I have so much knowledge of the history of the company, old work/projects done by people who no longer work here, legacy data--and that kind of experience you can't train someone on--it just comes with time.

    Right now I'm training someone to cover me for mat leave and it has been more painful then I anticipated. In the short term my company would SOL is someone just dropped off the planet, but within a few weeks it would be all sorted out.

  • I've often been in jobs where I thought/knew if would be chaos if I left, but then someone once told me this analogy: a company is like a large bucket of water and one employee is like putting an arm in that bucket. The arm is a huge force in the bucket of water, it changes its composition. But if you remove the arm, the water fills in the space. It's not a criticism of the arm or the water, but the space will be filled.

    I think, as women, we like to be "needed" - but we can't let it hold us back from new opportunities, either.

  • I am very familiar with that analogy with the bucket of water!! BUT... since they have no clue of things I do and when they need to be done, the first month would be total chaos!!

     

  • My paralegal knows exactly what is going on in all of my cases, what I am working on, and what I need to get done. If I died, she could bring a new attorney up to speed in no time. If she died... God help me.

  • It would be chaos for months at the very least. I run a small marketing agency and report directly to the owner who is not involved in the day to day whatsoever and I do a lot of things that nobody is even really aware of that keep things running smoothly.

    I think anyone can be replaced, but it would really mess them up if I just fell off the face of the earth. 

  • I was recently termed my boss's "work wife" and that scares me. If something was to happen to me it would be bad news for the department. I know they'd figure out things eventually, but considering I'm the only one that knows of our debt management and fcc filings it could be interesting. I've recently started carpooling which leaves me less time at work and they've supplied me with a work computer to work from home... I keep trying to train people, but things happen and they move to other projects or I don't have time to train people.

    Good luck in your situation... try to cross train as much as you can!
