Ortho Evra Patch v. Nuva Ring - any experience?

About 18 months ago I had an ovarian cyst burst and cause a helluva lot of pain.  I was prescribed the NuvaRing to shrink existing cysts and prevent others from forming.  I hate using hormonal birth control.  I tried it and thankfully I didn't have the moodiness I got with pills (we are talking pseudo bipolar behavior).  But I had some irritating discharge thing then so I quit using it.

This week I had another cyst burst and got a nice lecture from my doc that it could have been prevented if I would have called him to try a different bc instead of just quitting the ring.  I know he is right and the pain I'm in right now is the lesson learned.

So now he wants me to take the patch.  I saw the breast tenderness side effect but any other feedback regarding a preference for nuva ring over the patch?

Re: Ortho Evra Patch v. Nuva Ring - any experience?

  • I can not compare to Nuva Ring, but I used patches for a few years before having the boys. It is the only bc that didn't give me morning sickness so for me it was great. I did not experience tenderness, though I gained a full cup size when on the patch (and it disappeared like magic the second month I was off them).

Edit: If Mirena is an option that would work for you I would highly recommend that route.

  • It did give me morning sickness.  I only lasted a month on it and changed to ortho tri cyclen lo(sp).

  • What about iud?
    image
  • Yikes on morning sickness.

The resident that was following him asked about IUD and he immediately poo poo'd the idea.  I was going to ask Karey what Mirena is until I went to search why he poo'd the IUD suggestion and I found this:

    Possible side effects:

    • Heavier menses for the first few months; lighter menses after 3-6
      months of using IUD.
    • Amenorrhea (lack of menstruation) occurs in about 20% of women at one year of use.
    • Pain for a day or so after insertion or removal.
    • Headaches, acne, breast pain during first few months.
    • Ovarian cysts (enlarged ovarian follicles) have been diagnosed in
      about 12% of Mirena users.
    • Higher chance of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) if you or your
partner has sex with other partners.

So that is why he quickly poo'd the idea - counterproductive to the purpose of starting BC.

  • I used to be on the patch and hated it. Wasn't it recalled or something? I know there was a news story that made me say "good thing I stopped using that."

I use the ring right now and I don't love it. It comes out all the time during sex and I honestly think it's kind of a pain to calendar.

I think I am going to go back on the pill...

  • I hated the patch. It was a higher dose of hormones than my body could handle.

    This thread is very encouraging.

Rayskit - I never had a problem with it falling out but did think it was harder to calendar since it was only once a month.  But NO ONE wants me on bcp.  I've tried 3 or 4 kinds and I'm a raving *** on every one.

Do you have any other side effects?  Irritating discharge or anything?  I'm wondering if when I had that it was unrelated?  The ring is sounding more promising than the patch as I do research online.

  • This is the recall information.  I don't have any risk factors for heart attack or stroke and don't use tobacco.  He was very concerned about that possibility.

  • I was on the ring and loved it. I didn't have any problems with calendaring. It would sometimes come out during sex, but that wasn't a huge deal.

    No experience with the patch.

  • I actually have used both. I was on the old patch in 04 (I think, it was when it first came out) and again for most of 07 . I tried to change my period/change day once and ended up with a 17 day period. I quit it after that and eventually went on the ring.

The ring was fine for a year, never had it come out during sex, always remembered to change it, etc. Then I started having problems with it, it cause SEVERE irritation, itchiness, infection, etc. Nothing I did changed (still was good about taking it out and putting it in) but something made it a big mess.

So I asked my dr about the patch-it wasn't available to the public at the time (this was in 09), I ended up part of a study for it. They changed the formula slightly. I loved it again. I had no problems, it worked, no side effects, etc. It might be worth a try since they've reworked it a bit.

Similar experience, except mine never came out during sex.  It was my favorite form of BC until H and I got serious and it gave him a rash...

Thanks for all these details.  I'm giving it a try for sure now that I know I'm not the only one who had the itchy issues with the ring.

I hope I don't have any of the side effects.

Man this whole experience SUCKS.  Oral contraception - no. Ring - not likely.  Patch - who knows but the side effects leading to a recall are scary (and btw it says that people over 198 lbs cannot rely on its effectiveness - just in case anyone over that amount is reading this).  I hate BC.  But the ruptured cysts can be life-threatening not to mention they hurt like hell and it is a super PITA to get them diagnosed and checked out.  I screamed in the doctor's office yesterday when he was examining my lower abdominal area - and remember I had an >10 lb baby vaginally and only raised my voice when yelling at the doc to get done washing up and get the baby out... and later when there was no anesthesia and he was stitching me up.

Argh.  The only positive thing about it all is I have middlesmertz which can be related, I guess, and because of the middlesmertz I got pregnant on the first try because I KNEW when my egg released - I know almost every month.

Middlesmertz.  Sounds like a diagnosis Papa Smurf would give Smurfette.

  • BTW the study I did was for the effectiveness on women from 160 up to 220 lbs. I wonder how recent the data on the 198lb effectiveness is. The study I did ended in Jan 2010 so I don't know how long it takes to finish the research.

no telling.  it was in the literature in the package.

  • I did the patch in college and over the summer (back in 2003 or so). My skin is fairly sensitive, and I got a mild skin rash from the adhesive. Otherwise--no side effects or problems. I had heard that breast tenderness was more likely when you wore the patch on your upper body--I always wore it on my hips (alternating sides every week so the skin could recover from the adhesive rash).

The rash was only noticeable for about 1.5 days after I removed the patch--I didn't notice it until I removed it and it cleared really quickly.

  • I used the patch for a while, but I didn't like the adhesive aspect of it. Kind of like keeping a cloth bandaid on for a long time... And all of the places you can put it were kind of fatty places for me, so the skin would stretch and stuff. Plus you can see it in a swimsuit and I didn't like advertising. I also didn't like it's stickiness when I would be in a hot tub or taking a long bath. And of I had it on my arm and wore a black sweater, the black fuzz got all on the edges of the patch, and I had to deal with that until it was time for a new one.

Thanks Jax.  Those side affects are better for me than an itcy vagitchy though. (nuva ring did that to me).

  • I did both.  I was on the patch back in 2002-2003 for a few months, and ended up stopping it because I started getting sick all the time.  (like lose 15 pounds because I was so sick)  I am probably crazy, but at the time it was relatively new on the market, and the sickness happened to coincide with me being on the patch.  I stopped getting sick within weeks of stopping the patch.  The only rational explanation I could ever determine was that maybe it was too strong for me.  Or maybe it was completely coincidental.

I used the ring for over a year, and really liked the convenience of it.  However, it was somewhat irritating, and didn't help my cramps at all.
