San Antonio, where to live?

What are some good areas to live close to Ft. Sam?

We are thinking about moving the family down there on our own dime. I will be there for AIT .  I am not going to be there long enough for the Army to pay for the move. I know I will not be able to live with them or see them unless I get a weekend pass. However, the cost of living down there is less, the BAH is more, and we will be saving $500 a month on private school alone. We are sending the kids to private school due to class sizes where we currently live (30 kids per kindergarten class) the school district down there has 11 to 22.

I am just researching right now so our minds are not completely made up. If anyone has lived down there I would appreciate some advice on where to look. We rented sight unseen once before and it did not go well.

Re: San Antonio, where to live?

  • How close to post do you want them to be?  A lot depends on how much you want to spend, if you want a house or apt, schools, etc.

Alamo Heights is very nice and close to Ft Sam, but also very $$$.  Terrell Hills also.  Alamo Heights school district is one of the best, NorthEast ISD is also very good from what I've heard.  We don't have kids so I honestly don't know details.

We kept our search to zipcodes 78209, 78218, 78216 for the most part.

You could also look in Converse (78109), closer to Randolph AFB - housing tends to be more affordable there. Not sure about the schools out that way.

Or, you could go further north towards 1604, but that is more of a commute to post, maybe 20 - 30 min depending on where you are and traffic.  Tons of development up there though.  TONS.

I would avoid west and south areas of the city.

  • I really wouldn't recomend moving your kids down there durring your AIT.  It will be rough on them.  By the time they start to get settled, it will be time to move again.  Besides, schools in most areas of SA aren't that great.  I would really reconsider if I were you.

  •    I know it is a lot to consider but, I honestly don't know if I can continue to fund private school and putting my son in a class with 30 kindergarteners and 1 teacher is not a good situation for a child with ADHD. The way it is looking right now we will probably have to move anyway.Sad

We do not have many family or friends in the area we are currently living so they are not that attached. (this will be our 3rd move with children). I am just trying to find out some good areas to live so I don't end up researching areas that turn out to be sketchy. We are not sold on the idea and I am still researching our options. I have 6 months to figure it out and I am sure we will make the decision that is right for our family.

  • Alamo Height and Terrell Hills.  We lived there for five years and loved it.

  • Was lurking when I saw this but thought I would add in.

I lived in the North and Northwest for a while (out around 1604) went to school in the central West area, my mother teaches in the Southwest and my dad worked in the North central so not exactly around Ft. Sam but here's what I've got. NISD isn't bad for kindergarten, SWISD isn't anywhere near Ft. Sam but it's a very small district population wise with lots of good kids, teachers and close attention if you don't mind the overwhelming hispanic culture; it is oddly, particularly military friendly. When I was in high school my friends had terrible things to say about the elementary schools in East Central ISD but I dont know what was the school and what was my friends just bad-mouthing it and if anything has changed.

I can't really recommend where to live if you don't want to be along 1604 but do know that Alamo Heights is expensive.

EDIT: Forgot a few ISD I knew about. Southside ISD and San Antonio ISD I heard terrible things about from teachers who had been there and quickly got out for better school enviroments.

  • Thanks for all the info, my parents own 2 houses so I am planning on moving into one until my husband returns from deployment to save money.

I will leave for basic one month after he returns and he will either move to San Antonio or stay living at my parents property, it all depends on how he feels about it when he gets back. It is good to have all the info on the area to help with the decision. Smile
