potty's for boys

is there a "good" potty that works best for potty training boys?  i've heard great things about the bjorn but that is from a lot of mamas that have girls.

thanks.

Re: potty's for boys

  • We got a little potty that sat on the floor, and a toilet insert.  William hated the little potty.  He loved the insert.  I think because he was using the big toilet.  Plus lots of stepstools.  Then DH had to sit to pee for a while, and teach both William and I how little boys should pee sitting down.  Now he can use a step stool (or not) to hop on the toilet without the insert, hold himself up with his arms, or legs spread to the knees, and pee.  I think it depends a lot on the kid.  Our hated the little seat.  Some hate the insert.  Good luck!

I agree with Erin, it depends a lot on the kid. We have the FP Frog Potty and a toilet ring, neither of which he'll use. He'll sit directly on the toilet at my parents' house, but not at home. My brother and DH's sister (2 diff. fams) had great success with Frog Potties and my sister swore by her Bjorn. I think as long as you get one with a "splash guard" for boys, you can't go wrong. Maybe let him go with you to pick it out. If you can get him excited about the purchase, he might be more inclined to use it.

That sounds like great advice!  I'll pocket that for later.

But holy crap, Shea.  Your son is 18 months right?  Do they potty train that early?  I wasn't even putting it my mindset until 2ish years to start thinking about it.  I was hoping to have it knocked out 4-7 months after that... but wow.

Maybe I'm totally confused, which would not be abnormal :)

I had Nicholas' potty bought by 18mos, hoping he'd see it sitting there and eventually be talked into using it. He used to sit on it naked before baths, but once he figured out what I wanted him to do, he refused. Now we're going with the picking out underpants angle. I promised him Tow Mater undies, I hope I can actually find some...

Potty training IS confusing! Lol! Reese started showing interested around a year. She was really interested at 18 months when she moved to the toddler room at school because all of the 'big' kids were using the potty. We had a huge setback when Grier was born and she is just now daytime trained at 28 months.

  • We got a cheap potty from walmart. Safety first is the brand, I think. It has a soft ring that you can flip. It goes one way for girls and the other for boys. It has a little 'shield' on the boy side. The ring part can also go on the toilet and they can use the potty chair as a step stool to get on the toilet.

  • Holy buckets.  Someone needs to stop the clock.  We're approaching 14 months and I'm SO not ready for this to be in the picture.  You guys are Super Moms!

    Eeek!  I'm scared now!

  • We had Will's bought by about 16 months.  He used to get horrible diaper rash about then, so we were doing a TON of naked time, and we used the toilet with him there, and he was very intriuged with what we were doing.  So we figured it couldn't hurt to have the toilet stuff.  Then about 18-20 months he wanted to sit on it.  So in the am when we were getting ready for work he'd sit there.  usually pee and poop (he was a regular poop in the am every day kind of man).  Awesome!  After he turned 2 we just would have him sit there every am, before bath, after bath, and when we thought he might have to pee.  He's nearly there, he just get's so distracted about knowing when to go-he feels it, then forgets about 2 seconds later.  and we have a recent aversion to pooping in the potty.  :(  so we're taking the slow and steady approach.  I'm hoping we're out of diapers before he turns 3.
