Hi All, I generally don't post on the local boards but I figured I'd give it a shot and see if you ladies wouldn't mind helping me out
By the way, I'm from Rockland Co.
We just had a seller accept our offer and one of the tasks we'd like to do right away are to renovate the kitchen (new tile, cabinets, appliances, countertops backsplash...pretty much a gut job!).
I'd appreciate any recommendations or even some thoughts on the process here (cost expectations, timeframe) :-)
Thanks!

Re: Kitchen renovations?
We are in the midst of an addition and renovation. We will hopefully be starting our kitchen soon, and it is going to be a complete gut job. So far we've chosen cabinets and countertops and appliances. I need to work on floors and lighting this week. I haven't even touched any bathroom decisions.
I'd suggest staying local since you will be going to these stores many times during the process. Besides Lowes and Home Depot, there are other places to look in Rockland- I'm sure some of the Rockland ladies will chime in. The options are really nice in the one on 59 in Nanuet across from Toys R Us. We ended up getting the cabinets and countertop in Orange County b/c it was closer. We got a good deal on the granite; I can let you know how the service was in a few weeks.
For appliances, we went with PC Richards b/c DH gets the law enforcement discount. We choose GE Monogram appliances (except we did the Sharp drawer microwave for the island and a samsung fridge). PC Richards will price match and they offer a 10yr warranty. Sears only offers a 5 year, but it includes maintenance. I've heard mixed reviews about Sears' service. I bought a month subscription to Consumer Reports and also used JD Powers. I didn't find them too helpful, except for the refrigerator data. Depending on where you are in Rockland, be careful with brown outs and power surges if you are looking at convection wall ovens. I've done a lot of research on that recently.
Two contractors estimates they can get the job done in a month, but that time frame includes completing gutting two bathrooms and reframing the walls b/w the kitchen and bath, resetting the plumbing lines, electrical and fixtures. I actually have a copy in excel of the kitchen work that needs to get done by the contractor. Maybe you can use it as a starting point. PM me if you want me to send it over.
Cost will vary- estimates will range widely for the labor. I can let you know some of the quoted I got. I've got a lot of tips if you want them.
Good luck! I hope it goes smoothly for you.
I have half an answer.
We purchased a new house with a huge kitchen and a tiny builder basic kitchen that wasnt very user friendly. (Fridge door wouldnt open all the way bc of location, hard to load dishwasher because it was too close to the sink)
We ended up adding on to the cabinets that were here. We added 13 new cabinets and drawers. We brought a cabinet door to HD and matched it as best we could. Our house is only 9 years old so it was too hard to find something similiar. We added granite which let us created a peninsula/breakfast bar and a new sink. We kept the floor tile because it covered so much of our first floor and an estimate we got was $12k just for the floors.
We had the cabinets installed by a handiman ($40/hr) about $900
I painted the ceiling and walls $ free
recessed lights installed $150 per light x4
granite $5k installed
kraftmaid cabinets $4,500
appliances free (we kept the old ones in white)
I can say we spent about $10k because we opened a HD credit card to get 20% off and we did it when they were having a granite upgrade promo.
The workers made it a bit more because we paid them cash.
Id say a total gut job depending on the size of the kitchen can run anywhere from $15k to 50k.
