Question for the runners

I was able to run 30 minutes last night for the first time, but i noticed by the end my hands and feet were numb and tingly. Is this nature's way of telling me I am too fat to run? Is this normal? Is this because I run on a treadmill? Am I dying? lol. I thought at first I might just need better shoes but then my hands started doing it too. Should I be concerned? The run seemed relatively easy but my heart rate was on the higher range for me. Thanks!!

Re: Question for the runners

  • That happens to my feet.. I am no doctor but I always figured it was because my blood was pumping more to my heart and lungs than to my extremities..

  • I have gotten that before when I have been training for half marathons- I am not sure what causes it but I am guessing it is normal just weird! :) Good for you for running 30 minutes- thats awesome!

Lol! Thanks guys Embarrassed I am really starting to enjoy running, I think I just might be a runner! I was only supposed to run 25 minutes for where I am on C25K but I didn't want to stop. I still have a long way to go and I am slow but I'm still doing more than I have ever done before.

Good to know that this is normal, I have no idea what to expect out of this running stuff. I didn't want to be doing something "wrong". That makes total sense about the blood going where its needed and away from the extremities, its just like when babies are born and their hands and feet are sometimes blue. I feel like I should have thought of that, lol.

  • I have gotten this in my feet before too.  I think good shoes help but part of it is just the running.  In between steps I wiggle my toes for a minute or so and that gets the numbness to go away.  Also, I switch from running on my toes/balls of my feet to running on my heels, and then back again and that seems to help redistribute the blood in your feet too.

  • Have you been to Fitness Sports off of 73rd to get fitted? Shoes are hugely important. Plus those guys know their stuff!!

My hands will get tingly, and this sounds dumb, but hows your back? When my back is out of wack, I notice my extermities get tingely, while running. Do you leave your rings on when you run? I have to take mine off. And since you were on a  TM, you might need a stiffer shoe? because there isn't a lot of give on a TM.

Totally excited for you that you ran 30min! That's awesome! If you ever need/want a running buddy, LMK! I'm no where near fast!

  • I will have to look into getting fitted for a good running shoe. I didn't want to spend the money until I was sure I would stick with it, but now I am really enjoying it so I need to do it!

I do have a bad back, so maybe that has something to do with it as well

I would love a running buddy once I get the guts to run outside where other people can see me, lol!
