pregnancy book recs

Wo we are going to start attempting the baby making... what good books or resources should I look at/buy for the whole shebang?

thanks!

Re: pregnancy book recs

  • Not a pregnancy book, but Taking Charge of Your Fertility is great for the TTC progress.

I do NOT recommend What to Expect When You're Expecting.  They give every worst-case scenario possible.  I didn't need the added anxiety.

I agree on Taking Charge of Your Fertility, great book for the baby making process.

I had What to Expect When You're Expecting and thought it was okay.  It can be information overload but I liked that anything I wanted to look up, I'd probably find something on it.

I also had Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy.  I didnt like it but I also think I had a very old, outdated version so it was sometimes useless.  For example, it talked about how there are not many maternity clothes options that aren't high neck, long sleeve, tents... when there are so many cute options for maternity clothes now at Old Navy, Gap, Target, etc.

I liked Jenny McCarthy's pregnancy book, if not just for the comedic factor.

  • I bought two and *maybe* read a chapter between the two of them. I found I got better info talking to my doc and friends.

  • I thought Taking Charge of your Fertility was really helpful.

For pregnancy book I really like the Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy. I also have What to expect when you're expecting and What to expect before you're expecting - they were OK, but not the greatest IMO

  • I read the Mayo Clinic Guide and the Dr. Sears book - a little clinical and a little hippy.
  • My MIL sent me The Pregnancy Book (for my birthday 2 years ago, before we were TTC--but that's a side note).

Its by Drs. William and Martha Sears and came very highly recommended by the nursing instructor who taught her labor/delivery section of nursing school.

(Side note: I'm a little annoyed by the book, and a little more annoyed that she was talking to strangers about my fertility when we weren't working on getting pregnant).

  • L - I have TCOYF - never read it because right after I bought it I got pregnant with Collin.  Oops!  haha.  Now that DH had his surgery, we won't need it.  It's yours if you want it!

  • TTC also.  A friend let me borrow her copy of TCOYF and it's really helpful!  Good Luck!

  • If you are into hippy dippy kind of things, you will love Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin. Such a wonderful book. Any Ina May Gaskin books are very informative and well written.
  • I am really liking the Mayo Clinic guide. It's very straightforward. I think of it as my basic information source and you can supplement with other books that have birth stories or are about specific delivery methods etc.
