'why are you looking to leave?'

So i've been looking for a new job for over a year now and while I haven't gotten any responses, I've been re-directing my focus as to what I am looking for hoping to broaden myself.

I know why I am looking for a new job but I am not sure how to properly answer that question that doesn't raise red flags. My reasons? The commute is very long (2.5 hrs each way) and the new job I was just placed in (wasn't given a choice) doesn't challange me or use me to the best of my abilities. I went from an admin who did all aspects of account management to an admin who answers phones all day. This move to this group wasn't my choice, i was placed here after my job moved out of state.

Any tips on how to answer the question as to why you are looking to leave?

  • thanks for the words i was looking for a new job to better use my abilities!

im looking for a new job too

  • I had a job with a horrible commute.  It took about 1.5 hours in the morning if I left before 6:15 AM and took about 2 to 3 hours in the evening.  I said just that when interviewing..."I am spending 3-4 hours/day commuting."

I got almost the exact same response from everyone I interviewed with--oh that doesn't sound good.  I can see why you're looking. (or something along those lines).

I think anyone would get it if you say "I am spending 5 hours/day commuting"

I would be careful with this one.

To many people, you spending 5 hours a day commuting is YOUR problem. You can always make the choice to move closer to your work, in their eyes, even if it's not practical for you in reality.

I would focus more on the professional/technical aspects of why you're looking to leave, and focus less on more personal reasons such as commute and work/life balance.

  • "I'm looking for a position more in line with my personal and professional goals."
  • Tell them exactly what you told us. Your honesty will help find you a better fitting job, and they will respect you for giving it to them straight up.

When I was job hunting, I didn't want to say that my neurologist told me I would have fewer migraines if I had a regular schedule. I just said, I'm looking to get out of retail and get a more regular schedule for my personal  life. I didn't want potential employers to think I was going to call in sick a lot for work.

However, in your situation, it doesn't sound like you are whining or that you have anything to hide. Just tell them you are looking for a shorter commute and a more challenging position. You are looking to do more than answer phones.

  • I wanted to add that I think if you are too vague or if you sound cliche, they will be suspicious. I shadowed on some interviews at my last job, and my boss would quickly turn down applicants that sounded too rehearsed or insincere. Even though you really mean those words, they won't believe you if they don't sound like the rest of your words.
  • I have interviewed and hired many staff and actually looking to reduce a commute would be one of the most reassuring reasons a candidate could say. If a job would legitimately expand a skill set that is a good reason but I also worry that means someone may get bored and cranky with this job or may job hop.
  • I got asked this in my job interview (which I got) for a contracting role. Valid question, since I was in a permanent job.

I said: to be honest, I really wasn't looking to move at all. I get approached by agents frequently for roles, but your role sounded fantastic and a really great fit for my skillset so I was happy to hear more about it.

OR: I was brought on to service X client which has been great, however the sales pipeline has tailed off and I'm not being utilised fully.
