What to wear to new teacher orientation

I am not a teacher, but I am a certified employee new to the district. This is my first job out of grad school so I'm a little lost. I was thinking slacks and a button down shirt, is that appropriate?

Re: What to wear to new teacher orientation

  • That would be fine.  I would do a short sleeve blouse with slacks and bring a cardigan, because if the orientation is at a school the temperature could be just about anything!
  • just don't wear a suit! Some people will be in shorts, some in dress clothes.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Sounds good...I agree, you don't need to wear a suit, but definitely dress professionally. I always think it is better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. Nice pants and a button down shirt sound appropriate!
  • i agree--dress pants and a button-down shirt or a knit top sound great.  and i agree that you'd rather be a little overdressed than a little underdressed.

not quite related, but something i will always remember about my first department chair, who has since passed away, was that when i had to go in for my very first meeting at school, he actually called me to let me know that everyone would be wearing shorts.  i thought it was so kind of him to not only realize that i would have no idea what to wear, but to go out of his way to call me and let me know what to do.  :)

  • Pammie,

That is so nice....I had a similar experience with one of my mentors. She told me the day before an orientation the same thing, everyone would dress casual in capris and shorts. Thoughtful that they thought about how new people can get worried about those things!!

  • Congrats on your first teaching job! I have been teaching for 13 years and I am so grateful I choose to go into education.

New teacher orientation is certainly not something you need to get super dressed up for, but looking professional is always important. People will only take you as seriously as you take your self, so if you present your self with confidence and dress comfortably, but professionally you will be off to a great start.

    Good luck!

i agree.  that said, i will be the one in meetings (the week before the kids get there) wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and a fabulous pair of sandals.

  • I usually do what I call comfy-casual- like khakis and a blouse, because I teach smaller kids and want to comfortably move around. For the first day a lot of teacher dress down, because their moving boxes, furniture and unpacking their classrooms. Your outfit seems good, since you don't know yet what others are wearing.
