Coming off BC...

Hi Ladies:

I haven't been on much lately, but I'm going to try to post more to this board again!!

Anyway..I had a BC question.

I stopped taking my BC after the last pack three days into our Europe trip in mid-June (13th, I think) and we have been TTC since then :-) .  I should be at the point where I would get AF...and I've had cramping for the past few days like I should be getting it...but nothing.  Is this normal coming off of BC??  I took a pg test on Monday and it was negative, but that was probably early to test anyway.  So I don't know when/if I should test again or what is going on since I rarely had AF on my BC.

What have your experiences been coming off BC?  I know AF could just take longer to arrive, but I thought I would see if anyone had experiences like mine with the cramping but no AF..exhaustion by mid-day (though I'm working a camp all day, so that could easily contribute to the exhaustion)

Thoughts?? Thanks!!

Re: Coming off BC...

  • Well, you've already heard my input/experiences, but I did look it up and the "official" advice seems to be test once per week until you get your period or a BFP, and if you hit 60 days w/o either, contact your ob/gyn so that they can write you a prescription to jumpstart your period.

Annnnnd it's quite fun to see this post from you. :)

  • I came off it per a Dr's recommendation (not my gyn). I think I had one or two light periods (similar to being on BC), but then mine went back to normal (super crampy, super heavy). I lasted about half a year before I went back on it. I don't remember being more tired.

It wouldn't hurt to call your gyn anyways, just to ask her about it.

PS: Looking at your picture in Rome, were you on a cruise? :)

  • Too late now but it is usually best to come off the pill and wait with TTC until you have a period.. just to give your body a chance to get the pill out of it's system and for you to be able to track your menstruation.

Anyway, at this point I would wait and retest once a week for the next 3 weeks. If it stays negative and still no period then I would call the OB/GYN

    Good Luck!!

  • When i first came off my BCP in the end of October my cycles were extremely long. I would skip a month between my first couple of periods. Like previous ladies have said test once a week until AF or a BFP. If you reach 60 days contact your ob/gyn. good luck.

I know your input...thought I'd see what others have to say too.   But good to know on the 60 days!  Thanks! :-)

And yes, I knew you would ;-)  J needs a playmate!  haha

No, we did a bus tour of Italy, Switzerland and then ended in Paris.

Well, that was the original plan. I was going off of it then to start trying by the end of the summer.  But suddenly DH was okay with trying for a European souviner...and I wasn't about to discourage that! ;-)  I will probably just wait to continue TTCing until I get AF now to make sure my body is adjusted.

  • I've been off BC for 2 years now and my periods were wonky for a good year.  They were never regular until at least 12-14 months later.  And no I'm not TTC, just wanted off the pill after so many years.

My OB wanted me off for 2 cycles to let my body adjust.  This is our first cycle TTC.

My first cycle off the pill was only 24 days (O on CD16), with a really short LP (only 8 days).  My second cycle was 30 days (O on CD 18), with a 12 day LP.

The girls on GP suggested Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It was so informative and I feel like I understand my body a lot better now.  I borrowed it from a friend, since BCPL doesn't carry it.  Sad

Also, you can sign up for Fertility Friend and they have a basic charting course to help in your TTC journey.
