Do dude ranches still exist?

Or a place you can go and stay/do horseback lessons for a weekend? Thinking of taking our mom for her 60th birthday. Shes been asking for lessons.
EDIT: we are now looking for something with a more girly feel!

Re: Do dude ranches still exist?

  • There are lots in the hill country.  A quick google turned up many options.  That sounds like such a fun idea!

My parents have taken DD here several times and they always have a blast. They are planning to go again next Summer.

  • I did a quick google search and it looks like there are some over towards Bandera if you are willing to make that trek.  I think it sounds like a lot of fun.

  • Thanks girls!

  • I have a friend who is a professional horseback-rider.  I asked her for recs and places you should stay away from if any.  I'll let you know what she says.
  • I know the Equestrian Center is nearby us.  I havne't checked it out, but maybe they do just one-off lessons?  You won't get the "dude ranch" experience though.

It's her 60th birthday so trying to think of something fun for the weekend :-)

  • The other girls look like they have you covered but I wanted to share - a colleague of mine got sick of working in HR.  Her husband (a pastor) felt called to lead a new church.  They moved to Colorado and took over the housing part of a dude ranch so it's a Christian dude ranch experience full of retreats and more.  They absolutely love their life.

  • Yep, there are lots, if you want to go farther than the hill country look in Arkansas or Colorado, both have quite a few.  We went to a ranch in Arkansas every summer when I was a kid (it's no longer there) and had the best time.  I can't wait to take Cooper somewhere like that when he's older.   Big Smile
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.

We've been to Silver Spur a couple times - it's a great place.

  • We used to go to one in the Hill Country called Lazy Hills. I just looked it up and unfortunately they no longer call it a dude ranch nor do they offer horseback riding any longer. :(

  • This is probably way far for what you're looking for, but my family and I went every summer for so many years, and this place is my "happy place".  It's seriously amazing and I can't wait to take my kids there one day!

I've been there a couple of times too.  It was fun when I was a kid, especially the breakfast trail ride.
