Poll: If You Won The Lottery...

Re: Poll: If You Won The Lottery...

  • Immediate family (and maybe a few extended members if I was giving them any money) and my best friend.

  • Immediate family (depending on how much I won I would help each of them out in some way, like start a college fund for each of my nieces/nephews).

  • We'd probably tell our parents, because we'd pay off their houses for them so they could retire and live comfortably.  Outside of that, probably not.

  • I would like to say I would only tell immediate family, but it's hard to say friends and co-workers wouldn't know something happened based on the change in lifestyle that would occur.

This is a really good point. Initially I think we'd tell immediate family and a few select friends but I think something would become apparent over time and eventually more people would find out.

  • It would depend on the amount. If we won enough that we could invest and live comfortably without working full time we would probably have some explaining to do. If it was just enough to pay off our debt and put some in savings we would probably just tell immediate family and friends.

  • My attorney and my mother (in that order). Case by case basis after that.
  • It depends on the amount. People would notice if I started living differently off of a large amount, but if it's just enough I would only tell my parents and my best friend.

  • The whole fuuking world. Who cares about begging letters sent to my old house? I won't be living in that shack anyway, suckas. I'll be in an undisclosed location swimming in my gold-trimmed pool drinking margaritas and lighting benjamins on fire for kicks.

  • Yeah... I'd tell family, friends, etc but I wouldn't publicly announce it to newspapers or anything.

& I'd definitely tell my boss when I quit my fuckings job.

  • Yeah, you'd see my face on the news smiling from ear to ear.

I'd have a new address, a po box, new phone numbers, new email addresses, probably wouldn't log in to my FB account again...I'd be fine.

  • Your boss may go to the newspapers.  I think there may be some rules too as to if the lotto/lottery here in the states are able to use your name and image depending on the amount of the winnings.
  • DH and I talked about that after one of the powerball winners a few months ago bought their ticket in an adult shop, lol. I think it was Illinois, and the law there states they have to allow the publicity if they win, so haha! We were laughing at all the explaining that person may have had to do.

Assuming it was enough to worry about begging letters and such, I really wouldn't care. I'd hate the publicity, but it kinda comes with the territory. Maybe I'd hire someone part time just to go through my mail. Either way, I'd be living a much different life, so it would be pretty obvious that SOMETHING happened.

  • LOL, LB. Like Madisen said, you can't keep it a secret--it's part of the agreement. But I would tell as few people as possible and let it filter down. I'm sure that would take, oh, 30 seconds. I would do my best to make myself scarce and unreachable, however.
  • Sigh, w/ some of the people in my family, my first instinct is to say I'd tell no one.  I'd help people I'm close to, of course.  But, they don't have to know how I got the money!  haha
  • I would tell one of our closest couple friends and our parents. I would try to limit who we told.
  • Immediate family and a select few close friends.  And THE NESTIES, OF COURSE, LOL, ZOMG, EWCM!
