Best way to care for a butcher board??

We just moved into a house that has a butcher board in the kitchen - what is the best way to care for this?

  • Is it being used as a butcher block or just butcher block used as counter top (not used for cutting?) If it's not for cutting, you need to find out if it's been finished with something like a varnish or if it's just been oiled (which is what you'd do with it if you're going to cut on it).

When I had one that was used for cutting, I cleaned it with vinegar and maybe once a year oiled it with mineral oil.

  • I just have a butcher block cutting board (a large one.) I clean it w/ vinegar and water and rub mineral oil on it every few weeks.
I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!
