Chicken Fried Steak- Ideas?

Although ridiculously unhealthy, I thought I would make this as a treat for my husband and stepkids before they leave because they LOVE it.  I've never made it, and am looking for a foolproof recipe.  PW has one as a last resort, but I was hoping you ladies might have a fave recipe or tip/trick...TIA!

Re: Chicken Fried Steak- Ideas?

  • I have no clue how it is made but I'm sure it can't be that hard. Yum, this is what I order when we go to Millard Roadhouse Cafe the day before the sale starts each season.
  • Walmart (Sam's carries them too) has frozen ones that come in a blue bag (I forget the brand, but they are usually in the chest freezers in the middle). I think they are better than any chicken fried steak I can make from scratch! I don't like making it myself because I hate how thick and chewy the cube steak is, but that's just me! I've made PW's recipe and wasn't a fan. It wasn't crispy enough for me.

  • I've only done PW's recipe with her mashed potatoes and its soooo good!  My only issue is I have a hard time keeping the flour/egg batter on the meat..it always falls off when frying, probably because the cube steak I use is over tenderized, because it tends to fall apart too....so not sure how she does it!
  • i've never made it, I've never fried anything at home before, I have however purchased the ones mentioned from Walmart, they are in the frozen section and you bake them on a cookie sheet. They were good but really fattening.  We probably would only buy them again every once in a great while.
  • Sandra Lee has a great one on her website.
  • I want to say that Fareway carries some in their meat department at times. I have never had it, but everything else I have ever gotten from there has been great!

  • Thanks all, sounds like my best bet is the pre-made route and I'm fine with that:)  I'll make the homemade PW mashed potatoes instead of Potato Buds to make up for it, lol.

I have this same problem. Whenever I watch the Food Channel (which I love!) They always fry something and then stick the pan in the oven. Usually I get a good crisp on it but when I let it sit there until the meat is done is when it seems to fall apart. I wonder if you can just get the outside done and then pop it in the oven.

I love chicken fried steak but that is one thing I am willing to pay a restaurant to cook for me!
