Fitness WWYD??? - Clicky Poll

Starting on Aug 1 my work is going to 90% telecommute which is great for me and I can get back into a boot camp.  I must start by saying that I've tried to get in shape, lose weight etc on my own and it doesn't work for me.  I've tried joining the gym but I got bored and stopped going.  Boot camp is only thing that's worked for me.  I'm going between 2 of them.  I've done both before so I know the trainers, class etc but I'm at a loss on which one to go back to.  I had to stop going becuase we moved and it didn't work with my work schedule.  Now that I am working from home I'll have more time in the am.

The harder you work the more results you see.  Boot Camp 1 has downtime where boot camp 2 is constant go go go.  Boot Camp 1 has a wide variety of people and less intense, where boot camp 2 is more intense and has a lot of physically fit people.

I should note that I am not physically fit but my goal is to lose 30 lbs by Christmas (more would be great too!!)

Re: Fitness WWYD??? - Clicky Poll

  • Is there one you are slightly less likely to stick with?

Personally I would do the Boot Camp 1 for two months to build back up the foundations and not be overwhelmed by the time commitment.  Then I would move to boot camp 2.

  • In reading your post, it seems like the one you really want to go to is #2.
  • I'd go for the one that's more intense that gave you better results.  Just go for it.  It sounds like you know what you want to do and what is best for your body.  You have a little voice in your head (my life coach calls it "the chicken") making excuses for why you shouldn't jump back in -- but you SHOULD!  Your weight goal by Christmas is aggressive, but attainable -- if you really work.  So I say, commit to the harder one.  Instead of being intimidated, look at those people as inspiration!  Do you think they looked like that when they started?  Nope.  They've been doing BOOT CAMP for months.  You can look like that, too.

As per Nike: Just do it!

  • These are my thoughts:

    1) Go to the class you enjoy more. You're more likely to stick with it if you enjoy it more.

    2) I probably wouldn't go to either class, because they're both far away from your house. I'd look for something no more than 10 minutes away. But that's just me.

  • I'm with Wines, I would first look to see if there was a boot camp closer to my home.  My early morning motivation is not the strongest so distance that early would really matter to me.  Barring a closer option, I would choose the one that you enjoy the most.  I don't know how recently you last did wither boot camp, but I am willing to bet the groups have changed up a bit and both might have a different feel now.
  • Can you do a free class in each to get a feel for it.  The group dynamic has probably changed and I would want to try out each again before committing.

Also, communicate to the leader what your goal is.  He/she may be able to push you more during class and give you "homework" to help you attain the goal.

  • Another thought: the way I make the gym work for me is to have TONS of variety. Try lots of different classes.  Do a Couch-to-5K program.  Mix it up a LOT, so that you don't get bored.

I missed the length of the commute.  that would not work for me.  I just joined a gym two blocks from my house -- and they have another location 6 blocks from my house that i never even considered, b/c the extra walking would make it less palatable at 6am!

Do whatever it takes to make sure you go.  If that's a program that you love and it's wroth the drive, then try that.  If the drive seems overwhelming, find a fitness buddy or see if a gym nearby has a bootcamp series (many do.)  Just find something you will stick with, and I'm sure you'll make it work

  • I think the drive distance for both with lead to plenty of excuses of why not to go. Is there a crossfit near you? I have a friend who has battled her weight for years and she has been going to crossfit for a year and looks amazing.

If you think the drive is no problem, my vote is for #2 because it sounds more challenging.

  • Thanks everyone... I have done both of these boot camps before so I know the trainers, the groups and what to expect.  I will get more of a challenge out of the 2nd one and that gave the most variety with the better results.  That's the one that's much more intimidating to me though.

I've tried to find something closer to my house but NO luck.  I don't actually like the gym even if there are classes offered - for some reason it's just more boring.  Both of these are outdoor bootcamps.  There was a crossfit in my area (burke) however the guy closed the doors due to no interest (the class was VERY boring).
