Thoughts

My nephew is due at the end of this month. My sister has finally picked a name out for HIM - they are going to name him Avery. What do you think of that name? Be honest. I dont know if I like it or not for a boys name.

Re: Thoughts

  • Avery, I think, started out as a boys name.  The boy in Charlotte's Web is named Avery.

I think it did originate as a boy's name, but it has recently gone to the girls.  A lot of people now a days will probably assume the child is a girl because the name Avery is associate more with girls than boys.  Our neighbor's got 7 Christmas photo cards from friends with little girls named Avery last year.

It's not a terrible name by any means.  Would I use it?  No, but I wouldn't give the side eye to anyone who named their boy that.

  • I was just wondering if it was more a boys name or girls name? They went from the name Eli to Avery. I am puzzled lol.

  • wasn 't Murphy Brown's son named Avery? I think of it more as a boy's name but then I don't know a lot of babies so I'm not up on the trends. My first thought was "the address labels?" ;-)

Ha!  This is the first thing that comes to mind too.   I use them all the time.

  • My first thought is my BF's daughter who share's that name so I'm pre-dispositioned to think this is a girl's name.
  • Our family doctor when I was growing up was a man whose first name was Avery.  So, I think of that nice old doctor when I hear the name.
  • It is definitely more of a girl's name now. Before staying home with N, I worked in elementary education. All of my Averys were girls.

  • The first Avery I ever knew was a boy. TBH, every time I heard of a girl Avery after that, it sounded weird. If your sister likes it for her baby, there's really nothing you can do except smile and get over it. :)

Oh my gosh. I thought I'd be the only one to think of Murphy Brown! Ha!
