Birth Control

I'm currently using Ortho TriCyclen and have been for years now. The past six months or so I've noticed that I've started spotting in between periods which I never used to do. Also my sex drive has crashed, I just dont have any interest in sex. I'm thinking it might be time to change up my birth control. Has anyone out there tried any of the newer pills like Seasonique where you only have four periods a year? I'm interested but would like to get some user feedback as well. Anyone else having issues such as this???

Re: Birth Control

  • I was on Ortho TriCyclen and did not have any problems, but every body reacts different to birth control. I myself have never tried Seasonique or anything like it, but my exroommate did. She was thrilled to only have 4 periods a year until she got her first period. She said it was unusually heavy and her cramping was worse than normal. Needless to say, it came back with a vengeance.
  • When I was on that I had nothing but issue - spotting all of the time. I was emotional. It was a disaster. I have not tried anything new that has come out. I need a low estrogen pill.
  • Hi, I was on seasonale for a couple years & just came off of it.  It killed my sex drive & I had horrible spotting inbetween periods.  It felt like I was always bleeding.  Little did I know when I came off of it, my Dr. said thats a very common problem with that pill.  She wanted to switch me to Sprintec, said it works much better, but I spotted after 2 weeks so I just stopped taking them.  we're gonna start TTC anyways.  HTH!

  • If you're spotting between periods, your pill may not be working effectively anymore. I would definitely talk to your doctor about switching pills as soon as possible. I never used Sprintec, but I did use my NuvaRing back to back for the same effect (no periods).

  • I may be the odd duck, but I LOVE my Seasonique! The first 3 month round of it does suck a little, with some spotting in the last month and a half to my period... but my periods are shorter and lighter, and I've been on it for over 2 years now with no problems. So I guess I just got lucky, but I have nothing but good things to say about it.

  • I'm also currently on Seasonique and LOVE it! My Dr. warned me that for the first six months I may have some spotting until my body adjusts to the new cycle, but, knock on wood, I'm a month into my fourth pack and I have not had any issues. Also, before my period I always got very hormonal as well as excruciating headaches the day before (I was on Yasmin before Seasonique) and the first two times I got my period I had a small headache the day before but was not as hormonal as I usually got with my periods, I think mostly because the week you have your period you're still taking hormones, so its not a drastic drop for your body. Light and short periods, no spotting, no more headaches, no more craziness right before, and I only get my period once every 3 months. There are horror stories, but there are also success stories. Everyone has different bodies. But IMO, I would go for it.
  • I was put on Ortho back when I was 19 and it totally killed my sex drive! I asked to try something else immediately.  I've tried a couple other ones since and I've been on Loestrin FE for the last 2 years.  I absolutely love it!  It doesn't stop my period all together, it just shortens it to about 2 days and it's very very light.  I highly recommend it!

I had the same experience. I LOVED it. I was on it for 8 years and don't have a complaint. I think birth control is a trial and error experience and is different for everyone.

  • I was on the Nuva Ring for years and despite the fact you have to put it in and take it out yourself it was the only one that I can honestly say worked.... It has little to no side effects and you don't even know it's there.  It's in for 3 weeks take it out for 5 days and........ I really liked it because the pills had way too much hormones! I was a mental patient and my husband called me psycho!

  • megs3084,

I am on Seasonale and am aslo thinking about coming off of it.  Did you experience any side effects when you stopped taking it (spotting, bleeding for long periods of time, etc)?  Also, how long did it take for you to get your period again (I'm sorry if that's invasive, I only ask because the pill is a 3month cycle, so I'm wondering if your body automatically goes back to a 1 month cycle or if it takes a while)?
