Coming off of BC...

So I stopped taking my BC after the last pack three days into our Europe trip.  I should be at the point where I would get AF...and I've had cramping for the past few days like I should be getting it...but nothing.  Is this normal coming off of BC??  I took a pg test on Monday and it was negative, so I don't know when/if I should test again or what is going on since I rarely had AF on my BC. And I've been exhausted by the end of the day this week, but it could easily be contributed to the camp I'm running during the day.

Thoughts??

Re: Coming off of BC...

  • You can retest just to make sure, but coming off BC your body can get all screwy. My first cycle off BCP was 33 days, 2 weeks into the cycle though I had pain like I couldn't imagine, a ripping pain in my right side, and it continued for months. For the 9 months I was off BCP my cycles varied between 29-52 days and I ended up with 2 cysts on my ovaries, and the discovery that the ripping pain that wouldn't go away and the cysts were all due to my endometriosis which was being masked by the BCP for all those years. Wait it out, see if AF shows up, if she doesn't show after 60 days call your doctor and they can prescribe Provera to jump start it. Wonky cycles are normal coming off BC though. If you haven't already, I would recommend checking out Taking Charge Of Your Fertility or the online courses fertilityfriend.com even if you aren't going to chart, it really is interesting to learn about your body. Good luck!

  • I've never been on BCP, but I just wanted to ditto what Yvonne said. From what I hear coming off BCP makes everything pretty much freak out.
  • When I came off, 6 weeks for me to get a period.  I haven't had one since.  (Got BFP instead)

  • Thanks, ladies! I figured it would be screwy coming off BC...just the cramping being spot on for timing had me curious.

Hope I have your luck getting the BFP before the second period!!!

  • It isn't rare for the cycles to be a little different when you come off of BC. You could have ovulated later than day 14 (if you have a 28 day cycle normally). I use OPKs so that way when I ovulate I know. And if I ovulate a few days late-I know not to get too excited if I'm a day late.

  • I am way late on this - but I too just came off BCP - and got my per yesterday. At only 23 days! I'm really surprised by this...I had suspected a really long cycle - but apparently I landed at the opposite end of the spectrum. I agree with PP's though that your body can be screwy after the pill. My gyno told me to expect 3 months before things got regular.

I agree with Keri about using OPK's. I did this last month too just to try and learn my cycle and am pretty sure I ovulated on day 12. It's a little tedious but to me worth it to have an idea of what is going on.

Thanks!  Did you test everyday with the OPK?  Where did you ladies buy yours?
