Stupid question...using bleach in washing machine
Ok, I have never used bleach. Ever. I have a ton of white sheets and clothes that I'd like to renew to their actual white color. I bought some Clorox and the instructions seem simple enough. My question though is, how do I ensure that using the bleach on a whites load won't affect the next load of colored clothes I wash? Does the machine thoroughly rise it all out? I have never used it for fear that all my colored clothes/towels/sheets will have bleach spots on them following a wash cycle of whites.
Re: Stupid question...using bleach in washing machine
Bleach scares me, but I think I remember someone telling me that the next load should be white as well without bleach as an extra precaution.
The closest thing I've used to bleach are those bleach pens where you treat one area.
I suspect it's an irrational fear, but always arrange my laundry such that I'm washing a load of crappy clothes right after a load of bleached whites.
so it'll all be our "housework" t-shirts, rags, H's ripped up jeans, my painting pants and/or dog towels.
If for whatever reason I have to do a load of normal clothes right after using bleach I usually run an extra rinse cycle just in case. Helps get rid of the bleach smell on the whites anyway. I honestly worry more about splashing bleach on the counter or the top of the washer or dryer and then putting non-white clothes down on the puddle.
Or spilling it on myself. that I've actually done. That's how my painting pants became painting pants...

I don't wash with bleach because I'm afraid I'm going to mess up our clothes. My dad always used to throw bleach in for sheets and towels, but somehow EVERYTHING had bleach spots on it.
I use color safe bleach for sheets, towels, etc.
If you use the bleach and run it through a wash, I would run through another load of stuff you don't mind getting bleach on before doing clothes.

Ditto.... I've never had a problem and never really thought about it.

Yeah, I think this is the normal answer. I have bleach paranoia.

Me too. Which is why I think I just throw DH's undershirts away and buy new ones instead of trying to get them ultra white again. Thanks for the advice ladies. I think I'll give it a whirl today...
Someone's getting a little brother!
Ditto again- we use bleach all of the time on towels/sheets and H's undershirts, and have never done anything special or had any problems.
Another ditto (quatritto?). I use bleach all the time and have never had a problem with it though I don't think it's as great as I'd like it to be--white sheets, towels and DH's T-shirts are never as white as they were out of the package and Becky's right--sometimes they can take on a slight yellow tinge (although supposedly you can counteract that with a bit of bluing dye).
Another way to whiten whites is to photobleach them by drying them in bright sunlight. A day in strong sun will noticeably whiten them (but will also fade colors).

I would use color safe bleach just to be safe and then do a load of whites.
