S/O Poll - Vacations in Foreign Countries
When you take a vacation to a foreign country, what kind of traveler are you:
- A must-see-as-much-as-possible-even-if-it-wears-you-out traveler?
- A well-paced but thorough traveler of focused destinations?
- A slow-paced see-what-I-happen-to-see traveler because, after all, it's vacation?
- An experiences over site-seeing traveler, or
- Something else?

Re: S/O Poll - Vacations in Foreign Countries
It depends on the country and if it's a repeat visit.
We visited Italy for our honeymoon and neither of us had ever been. We alternated between running and trying to see as much as possible in Rome and the Vatican and enjoying a cappucino/glass of wine/gelato in between sights.
For some place like Mexico, we've visited a couple of AIs and gone purely for relaxation but have visited the Mayan ruins, etc.
We leave tomorrow for Costa Rica and don't have too much planned beyond a zip line tour and tour of the volcano.
I'm another "it just depends." is it a landmark heavy country? or just a low key place to relax? there are too many variables. the most important thing for me is probably regional food and drink.
Maybe a good way to answer the question is this: after I have been most of the places on the top of my list, i hope to be able to return again and again to one specific place and get to know it from a more local perspective, rather than being a perpetual tourist.
Depends on where I am going. If it's somewhere where the beach is the main attraction (Jamaica, Fiji, Turks & Caicos, Greece islands, Acapulco, Costa Rica, etc.), we usually alternate between beach days and sight-seeing days. However, if it is a country where you are trying to see a lot (Europe, Australia, etc.), then we try to do a lot in that time. I just got back from Switzerland, and we were go-go-go up until the last day - where I was pooped from walking around so much. We had planned on another place that day, but I just relaxed instead.
I need a travel partner that wants to do all of that stuff, so it will make me do it, too, otherwise I could sit around all day and be perfectly content!
I think there are 2 different types of travelling - "going on vacation" and "going on a trip". I am a vacation kind of gal. ;-)

Like others I'm both. So many factors play into it. Will I get to visit again. Are tehre things I actually want to see or is this trip purely a sit around and relax kind of trip. FWIW- I never plan these but will be going on one next week- stateside. I'm already stir crazy.
I prefer to see as much as I can and absorb the local hangouts and haunts.
Because of competing priorities, travel outside the country for me comes with the assumption I won't make it there again.
In the U.S. is just easier because of other factors (mainly DH's fear to fly over the ocean) so I would want to relax more in the U.S. Except for in NYC or D.C.
ETA - If I hit my goal weight in this weight loss experience and maintain it for 6 months, I'm going back to Poland whether DH wants to go or not. A good friend lives there and I miss her (and her grandmother's pirogis).

ETA: This is with the assumption that I'm traveling without kids! With kids, I fall between the latter two.

This totally depends on the location, like many others have posted. In the Maldives, we were there for sand and sun, with a little snorkeling thrown in. it was super relaxing and there was tons of downtime. In Egypt, I was there to see as much as I possibly could. There wasn't much downtime at all (except for one bout of food poisoning!) In Paris, I like a good mix of sightseeing and relaxation. There are so many great restaurants and shops, as well as tons of tourist things to check out.
No matter what, we aren't huge planners. I like to see where things take us on vacation. I am itching for another overseas trip, it has been way too long!
