Gender question

So at our ultrasound today, the doctor asked us if we were interested in finding out the gender.  I really, really wanted to know what she thought, but DH didn't want to know unless she was completely sure.  She said she was "pretty sure" she knew what it was and they should definitely be able to tell us at our a/s at 20 weeks.  DH said he didn't want to know what she thought since she wasn't positive.

Of course after we leave, DH decided that he was ok knowing her thoughts and told me I could call and ask, but I don't want to get that news without him around and I won't really see him for the next week while he finishes studying for the bar.

So if the doctor can tell at 12w3d, what does that mean!?!?  Did she see a penis, or can she tell there isn't one there???  Heartbeat was high 150s.  I would love to know your thoughts!

Re: Gender question

  • I wouldn't trust the results that early on. I've heard of many cases where their guess was wrong that early. If it were me, I would wait until the 20 week u/s. I didn't want my emotions toyed with, lol! If you decide to find out now, I wouldn't rush out and buy pink or blue though. It's just too early, IMO. HTH! :)

  • I agree with Jen - I wouldn't trust the results that early. One of the girls on my Bump Board was told at 12 weeks it was a boy and planned everything for it then at her 20 week anatomy scan found out they were having a girl. It's totally your call but I would say wait just a little bit longer when they can show what is or isn't there and you can see for yourself. JMO
  • 12 weeks is way too early.  Why would the doc/tech even say anything about it?

I agree, we're not going to call to find out, and will just wait it out.  I just wondered if anyone knew what she could possibly have seen/not seen this early on.

  • Yeah, i wouldn't trust it. At 12, and15 weeks, they told my sister it was a boy and she just delivered a girl (she found out at 20 weeks it was actually a girl).

  • At my NT scan they guessed boy but of course said it was only a guess.  At my 15 wk u/s the tech said "probably" a boy but would not say definitely.  Finally at 17 weeks it was confirmed - boy.  I think they could take a lucky guess but again like all PP say it's still too early to tell.   My emotions were extremely toyed with because of the unknown.  Definitely do your best to be patient and wait for the 20 week u/s.
  • At 13wks, a boy and girl both look like a boy... the tech is going off of the "angle of the dangle" to determine which it actually is. There is a very good website to show you what I am trying to explain but I can't seem to find it. If you frequent the bump boards, someone over there may have the link.

  • Ditto everything above!  And good luck to your hubby on the bar!  Is he freaking out yet?  I had daily meltdowns at this point when I took it...

Found it!  Thanks for the information.  Of course, I have no idea what I'm looking at in the ultrasound pictures, so I guess only time will tell (though my completely unreliable ultrasound deciphering skills are leaning toward girl).

Thanks!  He's doing pretty well, actually.  I'm surprised how well he's holding it together considering the unexpected pregnancy, bar exam, uncertain job prospects stress he's under.  I definitely don't think I was nearly as sane the week before I the took the bar (in IL or FL!)  I know he's super excited for it to be over with though and would just take it now if he could.

Wow!  GL to both of you!  I have a friend whose H is studying for the Bar now and she can't wait until she gets her husband back and he gets a good job.

Now that I'm getting to the end of the pregnancy, I keep telling myself if I got through the bar exam, I can get through childbirth!
