One week in Italy...

Kid free... in October..  Where would you go?  What would you do?  DH has never been.  I spent a summer, but it's been a LONG time.  What's a "must see"?

Re: One week in Italy...

  • I've never been either.  My must-see's for a first trip would be whatever sounded the most interesting to me in the Lonely Planet Travel guide, lol.

I'd want to hit Rome, Florence and Venice for sure.

And i'd have a margherita pizza in Naples if I could, hehe.

But that could pretty much max out the trip.  There are also some gorgeous coastlines.

    Ack - 1 week isn't enough!

  • I'm working on that right now but September : )  I think we're going to head down to Florence since we'll be coming form Northern Italy.

  • Can I just say JEALOUS!!!!  That is 1 place I really want to travel.  I would totally do Rome and Venice, and Florence.  No clue where else.

Our travel for the next year consists of 2 trips to San Antonio and 1 to Dallas - all for cheer competitions.

  • How busy do you want to be?  One week isn't a whole lot when you factor in days lost to traveling and jet lag.  I'd stay in one city, like Rome or Florence and just explore that city more in depth.  With maybe one day trip to somewhere in the hills

I agree on Rome and maybe a couple of days in Florence though I guess it depends on what interests you. Are you more site oriented? Rome is fantastic for the Vatican, colosseum, Pantheon, etc.  If you're going to take it easy, start in Florence and head to Tuscany for small town action.  Scenery? Amalfi or Cinque Terre. A week doesn't go too far in Italy but I'd start with either Florence and/or Rome. Have fun!

  • Rome and Florence would be my top 2, based on the 2 weeks we spent in Italy.  Amalfi Coast is also quite lovely, as is the area near the Swiss border (Lake Lugano, etc.).  Venice was nice/okay, but didn't really live up to my expectations, so it would go much lower down on the list.  We only made a brief day stop in Milan, and while I'm sure there are some nice things there that we missed out on, it didn't "wow" me at all.  Assisi is also a beautiful, quaint, picturesque little town that would be worth an overnight if you're passing through that general area.

With only a week I just stick to Rome with a day trip to either Pompeii or Ostia Antica. You change trains in Naples to get to Pompeii so you could look around the city if you wanted to, but Naples is really grotty. I'd personally give it a pass. The Best tip is to get a Roma pass. I recommend getting it your first day at the national museum of Rome. The when you get to the collosseum you can blow right by that massive line that wraps around the building (roma pass line is to the right).

  • I would do Rome and Florence.  I spent a day in Venice and did not care for it all that much, granted it was cold and flooded while I was there.  I know so many people say that Florence was their favorite place, and I liked it a lot, but I really liked Rome for the amount of landmarks that you can see.

I adore Venice, but there isn't time for it with just one week.  I would stay in Rome the whole week and do day trips from there (Pompeii/Naples, Florence via Eurostar, Capri, etc...)

    So Tasty, So Yummy
  • DH and I went in 08 and we loved it. 7 days

We flew in to Venice, got there early in the day so it was easy to sight see some during that day.

Day 2- we took an (extremely) early train to Florence (amazing ride, the countryside is beautiful).  Spent the day in Florence, took a late train back to Venice. Short and sweet but so worth it.

Day 3- spent it in Venice.

Day 4- took an early train to Rome and spent the remainder of our trip there.

We loved it but were also super busy. There was no down time. Then again, you're in freaking Italy, do you really need downtime.

Edit- I guess the "downtime" was in the evenings, eating at a yummy cafe and walking through the streets of Rome.

This exactly. Florence, you can see the big things on your bucket list in one day (David, for example). Rome has so much to offer- the history but also night life and oh the food!

I will say, though, Venice will not be there forever and I think it's a marvel. It's so beautiful and there is a reason so many movies take place there. There is no other city in the world like it.

But I wouldn't try to cram too much in or you'll end up with nothing but tired memories. I was there for 3 weeks, staying very far north and only went to 3 cities other than where we were staying (Arco on the Largo del Guarda).

We really loved Venice too so my 1st vote would be to do Venice but if not that Rome would be my second choice. Lots to see and do in both places, have fun!!

I would definitely do the coast for a couple of days.

But then I'd be torn between Rome (for the historical experience) and Tuscany (for the wine and countryside).

  • I didn't love Rome, but it has a lot of stuff you have to see. :)

We were there for two weeks, but if I only had a week I would split it between Florence (4 or 5 days) and Lucca.

  • We spent ten days or and two travel days for our honeymoon.  We spent an entire week in Cortona, a tiny little sleepy town in the hills.  It was amazing, but we wanted something very, very laid back to recoup from the stress of the wedding.  We then spent three jammed pack days in Rome and had a great, albeit tiring, time there too.
  • I am going on a cruise which most of the ports are Italian.   So mine is pretty structured on days.  I do have one excursion planned from Savona to Cinque Terre which I am Totally stoked about!    And we have almost two days in Venice, so I have a couple of excursions planned as well!  (there's a group of us doing a Wine Crawl that afternoon before we depart!)
