Dream Home Poll

Tell me all about your dream home! Price is no object!! Here are a few questions to get you thinking, but tell us whatever you want.

Where would it be located? If you don't know a specific state/country then just describe the location.

Any ideas on the style of the house? (Colonial/Log cabin/Victorian/Penthouse apartment/etc.)

One story? Two story? More?

How many bedrooms? Bathrooms?

What rooms would you just HAVE to have? (Dining room, big laundry room, media room, etc.)

What would the backyard be like? (Koi pond? Pool? Firepit? Swingset for the kids?)

What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch?

Anything else you'd like to share about it?

Where would it be located? I honestly would still like to live in Michigan because all my family and friends are here.  It's hard to pick an exact city, but ideally it'd be relatively close to "everything", on a street with other houses, set back enough from the road for privacy, and enough space in between houses to seem spacious.  Lots of trees would also be nice, and maybe a tree-lined drive approaching the house.

Any ideas on the style of the house? (Colonial/Log cabin/Victorian/Penthouse apartment/etc.) Probably either something very traditional or a victorian style.  I'd definitely have to have a nice welcoming entrance with maybe a big front porch.  I like the combination of stone and painted siding.

One story? Two story? More? Let's say three, basically two stories with a finished attic space.  It'd have a nice finished basement too.

How many bedrooms? Bathrooms? Ideally the more bedrooms the better because then we could have guests over no problem.  I'd like a minimum of four, but 5 would be great.  Maybe 7 bathrooms or so.  That sounds like a nice number.

What rooms would you just HAVE to have? (Dining room, big laundry room, media room, etc.) Nice entryway with an interesting staircase, formal dining room for holidays, a study/library with built-in shelving, beautiful yet cozy kitchen, playroom of some sort for all the kids' toys, Large laundry room, mudroom off a back door.

What would the backyard be like? (Koi pond? Pool? Firepit? Swingset for the kids?) Fenced in yard with lots of green space bordered by trees for privacy, a BBQ area/outdoor kitchen for entertaining, maybe a pool as long as someone else took care of it, a big swingset/playscape for the kids.  Beautiful flower beds/gardens with lots of color.  Maybe a water feature/waterfall that is very natural looking.

What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch?  A finished basement/party space with a pool table and bar area for DH, a craft room for myself, a media room for watching movies.

Anything else you'd like to share about it? I think I'd want it to be fairly spacious so that we could entertain, but overall I'd still want it to feel cozy.  As much as I like the look of tall soaring ceilings, I think they feel cold so I'd probably try to keep the ceiling heights a bit lower than you see these days.

Where would it be located? If you don't know a specific state/country then just describe the location. THE BEACH!  Any clean, warm and sunny beach would do :)

Any ideas on the style of the house? (Colonial/Log cabin/Victorian/Penthouse apartment/etc.)  One of those brightly colored gigantic beach houses.

One story? Two story? More? Two or more.  If price is not an object then the cleaning person comes with right?

How many bedrooms? Bathrooms? 5 plus bedrooms for company that would come visit from gloomy doomy michigan :)  4 Bathrooms.

What rooms would you just HAVE to have? (Dining room, big laundry room, media room, etc.) Not sure what particular rooms, just lots of space.  An area to clean of the hypothetical sand.  A large deck so when we arent at the beach we can still sit outside and hear/see the ocean.

What would the backyard be like? (Koi pond? Pool? Firepit? Swingset for the kids?) The Ocean.

What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch? Fun nooks and lots of open space

Anything else you'd like to share about it? I'm saving for it as we speak :)

Where would it be located? If you don't know a specific state/country then just describe the location. It'd be no more than 15 minutes from either of our parents' houses...however I don't love that "magically" spot. But we are willing to compromise on what the actual location is if it meets all our other requirements.  We are realizing how nice it would be to be closer to both of them.  I'm just going to have a hard time leaving Canton :(

Any ideas on the style of the house? (Colonial/Log cabin/Victorian/Penthouse apartment/etc.) Don't care, so long as it's brick.

One story? Two story? More? One or two- preferably one, but two isn't a deal breaker.

How many bedrooms? Bathrooms?4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, but it has to have an office.  Or it could just have 5 bedrooms.

What rooms would you just HAVE to have? (Dining room, big laundry room, media room, etc.)  Formal dining is a must for us.  The next house needs to have a MUCH larger kitchen.  Laundry is not to be in the basement.

What would the backyard be like? (Koi pond? Pool? Firepit? Swingset for the kids?)  If we have the money for a pool boy- I'd love a pool.  Otherwise, it just needs to be large and fenced in.

What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch? Meh, nothing that I can think of.  We'd really prefer an older home that needs work, but for what we want, it's not likely we'd find anything.

Anything else you'd like to share about it? Our dream house really is just a blank slate that we can do what we want. :)

  • Where would it be located? If you don't know a specific state/country then just describe the location. Maryland, probably a little west of where I grew up (more rural, less traffic, still close to the good stuff, amazing schools.Any ideas on the style of the house? (Colonial/Log cabin/Victorian/Penthouse apartment/etc.) Colonial w/ a porch. Almost southern, except  not in the south. One story? Two story? More? 2 stories and a basement, preferably.
How many bedrooms? Bathrooms? Depends, at least 3, more if we have more kids. I like to have 1 guest room and one whatever room. Bathrooms at least 2 full and a half. What rooms would you just HAVE to have? (Dining room, big laundry room, media room, etc.)  Amazing kitchen and office area
What would the backyard be like? (Koi pond? Pool? Firepit? Swingset for the kids?) Fenced in with a big tree, patio and sunroom area as well. Firepit, self-mowing grass.
What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch? Tall ceilings in the main living room, kitchen next to that. I'd have a big laundry room too, plus a half finished basement and tons and tons of built in storage.Anything else you'd like to share about it? Lots of trees that raked up their own leaves.

Where would it be located? If you don't know a specific state/country then just describe the location. Lake Orion (to be closer to my family)

Any ideas on the style of the house? (Colonial/Log cabin/Victorian/Penthouse apartment/etc.) Colonial

One story? Two story? More? 3 storys (inc the basement)

How many bedrooms? Bathrooms? 4 beds 2.5 baths

What rooms would you just HAVE to have? (Dining room, big laundry room, media room, etc.) Media Room/kids play room

What would the backyard be like? (Koi pond? Pool? Firepit? Swingset for the kids?) All of the above

What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch? Granite countertops, finished basement with full kitchen/bar, an island in the kitchen, 1st floor laundry, maple cabinets, hardwood floors throughout most of the home.

Anything else you'd like to share about it?

The pool boy definitely comes with the house.  I think I've found just the perfect one for you too.

  • I'd be happy to design any of these houses for you when you hit the lottery.
    image

  • Where would it be located?  Martha's Vineyard, MA.  Near enough to the beach to walk or ride a bike, but not so close that we hear shouting children all day in the peak season.  :)  Preferably back in the woods somewhere on the west side of the island.

Any ideas on the style of the house?  A blend of Victorian/Colonial architecture, with traditional, warm decor inside.  With a wrap-around porch.

One story? Two story? More?  Two stories, with a "guest house" elsewhere on the property.

How many bedrooms? Bathrooms?  Enough bedrooms for my family, plus four-six more - obviously we have a multi-winged house planned, or two separate houses - plus the guesthouse.  (We want to run a B&B; the guesthouse is for honeymooners who want privacy/autonomy, families who need more space/resources to accommodate kids, etc.)

What rooms would you just HAVE to have?  Large kitchen and large dining room - even without the B&B aspect, we love to entertain.  Library large enough to require ladder on wheels.  Two offices - one for me/the B&B staff, and one for my husband (he's a writer).  Soundproofed play room for my kids.  Family room for "just us" and our personal guests, not for B&B guests.  Living/lounge area for B&B guests.  Large laundry area.

What would the backyard be like?  Decent amount of property, but not too high maintenance.  Some landscaping around the house, and a fence if needed (depends on tree lines, etc).  NO pool.  Lots of seating options - loungers, benches, hammocks, etc - but not so many that it looks cluttered and random.  Fire pit and small "outdoor kitchen."  If I can talk my husband into it, I want a small stable with maybe two horses.  :)  (Hey, you said money was no object!)

What kinds of features would you be sure to include if you were building it from scratch?  Soundproofing the kids play area, and maybe the guest rooms.  Restaurant-grade appliances in the kitchen.  Built-in bookshelves all over the place.  Maybe a couple of balconies - not every room.

Anything else you'd like to share about it?  Three must-haves that are missing from my current (fixer-upper) home:  Central air, an enclosed garage (preferably three-car, so we have room for storage/work space), and plenty of outlets!  I'd also love to have hardwood floors throughout, and a walk-in closet in my bedroom.
  • Location: I would still like to live where I am because my family is all close by which is Astoria, NY

I love my house now but I would love my house to be bigger Maybe three stories

I would like about 6 bedrooms and maybe 4 bathrooms

I would love my dining room to be bigger a media room a bigger kitchen a huge master bedroom with a walk in closet and a big basement

I love my backyard but I would like it to be bigger so I can put a pool in and have differnet sections for kids and adults

I would want a screened in porch like a sun room, french doors, a terrace off a reading room

This would be a dream and so much more
