month long period... shoot me now...

ok so I've had my period/bleeding for over 4 weeks now.  It varies from heavy to light but definitely there. Ugh I am so over it. I have no idea what to do. I have been taking my birth control regularly and have not had any other med changes.

The only thing I can think of is my mom died the same day I started my period (4 weeks ago yesterday) and that my hormones are so screwed up. I called my ob/gyn today and she said I needed to come in once I reminded her Mom died of ovarian cancer. Her first reaction when I called was to tell me to take a preg test which freaked me out. Luckily that was negative (I must admit, I was happy and sad at the same time!) It is NOT the time for that right now... so I'm just not sure what to do. I have an appt next wednesday and am so anxious to see what they say!

 Anyone had this happen?

Re: month long period... shoot me now...

  • Hey! I know it's super frustrating. I have been on the pill for over 3 yrs., though for a couple of months I went off because I didn't have any refills and couldn't get to a doctor. When I went back on, I had my period (or at least spotting) take like 2 weeks on avg., and that has happened up until this last period I had where finally it was a normal week. Nonetheless, also until this last month, I would also get spotting sometimes even earlier than that. I also had a time once in Mexico where I went off the birth control patch and started taking the pill and my period was heavy for 2 wks. I don't know if it was a different method, or I was pregnant, or what. I am planning to go off the pill in a couple of weeks so we can start possibly trying to have a baby, and I'm hoping I won't have something crazy happen again!
  • I don't think it's stress. Have your doc rule out thyroid problems and fibroids.

I had it happen about a year and a a half ago, out of nowhere. I had a pretty wicked case of fibroids.

You're also not too young for a biopsy, just to be safe.

A month long period will also put quite a strain on your bone marrow. GL.

  • about a month ago, i went to the Dr and they ruled out thyroid problems. Not sure what fibroids are. Gonna have to check that one out.

  • They are benign growths of the uterus. They aren't dangerous per se but they can cause a lot of pain and excessive bleeding during your periods.

You could also have some sort of hormonal imbalance. At any rate, a month long period isn't normal. Gl.
  • Mine actually did the same thing, I was bleeding for like 3 weeks straight on the pill. I went to the doctor and they switched me to a different brand of birth control. She told me it had to do with being on that particular type of birth control for too long. I'm still unsure if that is the reason, but after I switched it went back to normal.

  • I had a similar problem a year or two ago. What we came to find out is that all the stress I was under was causing my hormones to be crazy and I had a 2.5month long period. I would definitely still go to the dr, but b/c right after your mom died that could be the cause. Also, I am so sorry about your mother. I can sympathize b/c my mother also passed away when I was very young, and I wish you the very best!

When I was a teenager I would get my periods for 2-3 weeks at a time and they'd be pretty heavy and it turns out I had a pretty serious infection that caused some damage, so I am glad to hear you have an appointment next week because it could be something that needs to be taken care of asap.  Best of luck to you!
