Countdown Calendar

My husband is going into basic training in October and will be gone for two months. What are some interesting countdown ideas you have done to get through the time apart?

Re: Countdown Calendar

  • I counted down H's last deployment by number of workouts.  4 workouts per week times however many weeks he was scheduled to be gone.

ETA: I've also done it by number of dog training classes.  One class a week makes for a much lower number than 4xweeks.

  • I don't. Makes it worse. There's a reason the stupid deployment ticker is called the "donut of misery" lol.

Instead of counting down, I make weekly or bi-weekly "girl dates" or fun weekends away that I can enjoy while he's gone. Things to look forward to intermittently without focusing on the "ZOMG HUSBAND IS GONE" factor. I like to set little alarms on my phone that go off at the halfway mark, but that's about it.

  • Stamp letter envelopes and use one each day to send him a letter.

  • I was in my second to last year of college at the time DH was deployed. I kept track by how many weeks in the semester were left, how many classes I could crunch out while he was gone, how many midterms I took, how many papers I wrote. DH left the end of fall semester and was home a few weeks after spring semester was over, however I didn't get to see him until the middle of summer semester so it worked best for me to count it down that way.

  • I don't do count downs.  It makes it worse.

I plan something every week to look forward to.  I also X off every Sunday that passes.  Sundays are a special day in our family.  We make breakfast together, go to church, have lunch with family memebers and then have a movie night together after dinner.  At the end of the day, the kids mark another Sunday off the calendar.

  • I'm like TX, in that countdowns make it worse for me.  I make sure that I have plans each weekend, b/c those are usually the hardest days.  Weekdays aren't so bad b/c I'm busy with work and the everyday chores and errands.

  • DH has been counting down the Tuesdays (they are his hectic days). He usually keeps me up to date with how many more weeks are left. Ive been doing it with bills, "gosh, i just have to pay rent X more times before hes home". And I'm reorganizing the apartment to keep me busy in the mean time.
